Specifying a movement
Specify the calibre, diameter and height, jewel count, frequency, power reserve, accuracy range and test positions, hand and stem sizes, date or complication position, and for quartz the battery type and life. Ask for the technical sheet and approve samples fitted in your case and dial before production.
Quartz watches sold in the UK carry batteries and fall under the batteries and WEEE producer rules; see our WEEE guide.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 automatic watch movements under 9108 20 00 00, invoiced at £25,000 free on board, with £200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £25,200, so it is £5,040. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Timing: check rate, amplitude and beat error on a timegrapher in several positions.
Fit: check stem height, hand fitting and dial feet against your case and dial.
Finish and packing: check decoration and that movements are packed in trays against shock and dust. See our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
Movement orders fail on timing, fit and consistency. Rate and amplitude vary widely between pieces, stem heights do not match the case, and a different grade is supplied than the sample.
Cambridge China Bridge sources components for UK watchmakers, clock makers and repairers from small lots; see small orders.
