Sourcing wastewater bacteria from China
Wastewater treatment bacterial cultures from China carry 0% duty when classified as non-pathogenic microbial cultures. Confirm the strains and carrier against the tariff's veterinary and animal health certificate controls; animal pathogens from China need an import licence. Cambridge China Bridge sources wastewater treatment bacterial cultures.

Zero duty, with product-specific control checks
Heading 3002 includes cultures of micro-organisms, excluding yeasts. For non-pathogenic wastewater treatment bacterial cultures, 3002 49 00 20 is the candidate line. The table repeats that line for different buying formats, rather than showing separate tariff subdivisions. Classification still depends on the complete formulation. See the related lactic starter cultures guide for the wider heading.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, the relevant culture line carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no listed suspension. The tariff attaches Veterinary control and Animal Health Certificate controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm their application to the exact Chinese product with APHA. If veterinary checks apply, they must take place at an approved border control post.
Give your broker the strain identities, intended wastewater use, complete carrier and stabiliser composition, and animal-origin declarations. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. Animal pathogens or carriers imported into Great Britain from China need an import licence; a supplier's description of a culture as industrial does not settle its identity.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-pathogenic wastewater bacterial cultures, powder | 3002 49 00 20 | 0% | None |
Specify strains and wastewater performance
Specify the species and strains, powder or liquid format, carrier ingredients, viable count and test method, storage conditions, expiry basis and batch certificate of analysis. Describe the wastewater feed, treatment objective, temperature, acidity, salinity and oxygen conditions. Ask for performance evidence using representative wastewater, with an untreated comparison and agreed sampling methods.
State whether the cultures are genetically modified. Marketing genetically modified organisms for environmental release needs approval. Deliberate work with biological agents needs a risk assessment. Obtain handling information covering powder dust, splashes and the proposed dosing method before a site trial.
Separate organic-load treatment claims from disinfection claims. HSE defines a biocide by its intended control of harmful organisms through means beyond purely physical or mechanical action. Ask HSE to confirm the regulatory route if the supplier proposes pathogen-control claims.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 kg of non-pathogenic wastewater bacterial culture powder under 3002 49 00 20, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,500, so it is £1,100. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match strain declarations, formulation, carrier origin and batch references against the approved specification and certificate of analysis.
Viability: commission an arrival sample test using the agreed method; compare the result with the contractual acceptance criterion and retained dispatch sample.
Packaging: check seals, liquid leakage, powder caking, moisture damage, batch labels and storage information; review any agreed transport records.
Performance: trial a representative sample against the agreed wastewater conditions before releasing the batch for routine dosing. Arrange testing support where needed.

What goes wrong
A culture can arrive with intact packaging but fail its viable-count specification. Other problems include changed carrier ingredients, unidentified strains, inconsistent batch documents and performance reports based on a different wastewater feed. Powder appearance alone cannot establish identity or activity.
Agree acceptance methods and retain comparable samples before dispatch. Keep an unaccepted batch separate while identity, viability or performance discrepancies are investigated. Recheck the import-control position whenever the supplier changes strains or animal-derived ingredients.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on wastewater bacteria from China?
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, non-pathogenic microbial cultures under 3002 49 00 20 carry 0% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measure.
Do wastewater bacterial cultures need a health certificate?
The tariff attaches Veterinary control and Animal Health Certificate controls. Have your broker confirm the requirement with APHA for the exact strains, carrier ingredients and Chinese origin before shipment.
How do I check whether the bacteria work?
Agree a viable-count method and trial the culture in representative wastewater against an untreated comparison. Match temperature, acidity, salinity and oxygen conditions to the intended process.
Are wastewater bacterial cultures biocides?
Check the intended action and claims. HSE's definition includes microorganisms intended to control harmful organisms beyond purely physical or mechanical action. Ask HSE about products carrying disinfection claims.
