Sourcing Vickers hardness testers from China

Vickers hardness testers for metals and their dedicated parts from China carry 0% UK duty. Powered machines need CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions for the Great Britain market. Specify test force and optical measurement, then arrange verification after installation. Cambridge China Bridge sources Vickers hardness testers.

Duty on Vickers hardness testers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 9024 covers machines testing hardness and other mechanical properties of materials. Vickers hardness testers for metals fall within 9024 10 40 00; dedicated parts and accessories are listed under 9024 90 00 00. Both carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or import controls.

The wider heading attaches mercury import controls to 9024 10 80 00 and 9024 80 00 00. These are different lines from metal hardness testers. Official guidance describes additional restrictions on mercury-containing measuring devices. If your equipment contains mercury or is classified on either controlled line, confirm the applicable requirement with your customs broker before ordering.

Confirm the commodity code using the material tested, machine function and details of separately imported accessories. The Rockwell hardness tester guide provides related coverage within this heading. See import duty and VAT when budgeting for import VAT at 20%.

Specify force, optics and specimen handling

State the materials, specimen thickness, prepared surface and smallest indentation you need to measure. Agree the test-force range, loading sequence, dwell control, diamond indenter, microscope objectives and method of measuring indentation diagonals. For automated equipment, specify stage travel, focusing, image storage and operator correction of detected edges.

Ask for verification evidence against the Vickers requirements in ISO 6507, part 2, and agree acceptance tests using reference hardness blocks and your own prepared specimens. Arrange verification after installation when results support product conformity. Powered testing machines need CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions for Great Britain. Check the model-specific documentation through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Three automated Vickers hardness testers for a business laboratory, illustrative under 9024 10 40 00, invoiced at £42,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £44,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £44,600, so it is £8,920. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Force and results: check the agreed loading sequence, dwell control and repeatability on reference blocks at the ordered forces; match certificates to the machine and indenter.

Optics and software: inspect indentation edges through each supplied objective, compare automatic readings with manual readings and export a report containing the agreed test details.

Stage and specimens: check specimen clamping, levelling, focus and stage movement using your prepared samples, including the smallest features you intend to test.

Arrival and documents: inspect the indenter, objectives and stage for transit damage; check the conformity marking, declaration and English manual, then repeat the acceptance checks after installation. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A clear display can hide poor measurement. Surface preparation, blurred indentation edges, stage movement or incorrect automatic edge detection can change the reported hardness. An acceptance demonstration on a large, easily read indentation may miss problems at the forces and specimen sizes you actually use.

Agree a demonstration using your specimens before shipment, retain the images and raw readings, and settle who supplies replacement indenters, objectives and software support. Ask factory verification to check the maker's calibration equipment and ability to repeat your acceptance method.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on Vickers hardness testers from China?

Metal hardness testers under 9024 10 40 00 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Which verification standard should I specify?

Specify ISO 6507, part 2, for Vickers tester verification. Agree the forces, indenter and optical checks covered by the evidence, and arrange verification after installation.

Can I rely on automatic indentation measurement?

Compare automatic and manual readings on your prepared specimens. Check edge detection, focus and retained images at the test forces you will use.

Do powered Vickers testers need CE or UKCA marking?

For powered testing machines, confirm the applicable marking, declaration of conformity and English-instruction requirements for the Great Britain market with the relevant authority or your customs broker. Check documents for the exact model.
