Sourcing vehicle reversing lamps from China
Ordinary vehicle reversing lamps from China carry 2% UK duty; narrowly specified lighting modules may qualify for 0% suspension. The MOT manual requires reversing lamps to show white light to the rear. Check approval evidence and vehicle fit before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources vehicle reversing lamps.

Reversing-lamp duty and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8512 covers vehicle lighting and signalling equipment and associated parts. Complete reversing lamps normally fall under 8512 20 00 90. The component rows are relevant only where the goods match every feature of the listed tariff description. Separately imported bulbs and LED light sources are classified outside this heading.
The listed lines carry 2% ordinary duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or attached import controls. The complete-lamp code also lists 0% suspensions for narrowly described goods, including lighting modules and an authorised-use fog lamp. These are not a general reversing-lamp exemption. The supplied lighting-module footnote is incomplete, so ask your broker to check the full wording before claiming relief.
Confirm the commodity code using the lamp drawing, photographs, function and assembly details. For other products within the heading, see vehicle lights and horns. Use the import duty and VAT guide when reviewing landed costs.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete vehicle reversing lamps | 8512 20 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Circular integrated LED components meeting the exact tariff specification | 8512 20 00 25 | 2% | None |
| Rear lamp sub-assemblies meeting the exact tariff specification | 8512 20 00 35 | 2% | None |
| Other parts of vehicle reversing lamps | 8512 90 90 00 | 2% | None |
Specify reversing function and vehicle fit
Give the factory the target vehicle or trailer, mounting drawing, installation orientation, supply voltage range, connector, pin assignment and cable length. Specify whether the reversing function is a separate lamp or part of a rear cluster. Agree the lens material, gasket, cable entry and a sealing test before approving the sample.
The MOT manual requires reversing lamps to show white light to the rear. Ask for the approval certificate behind any claimed road-use mark and match it to the supplied model. Manufacturers and importers placing products on the UK market need to demonstrate compliance with relevant safety requirements. Retain the model-specific evidence and request electromagnetic compatibility reports.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 complete vehicle reversing lamps under 8512 20 00 90, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £43,000. Duty at 2% is £860. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £43,860, so it is £8,772. Import taxes total £9,632; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £860 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: compare the delivered lamp, lens markings and model reference with the approved sample and supporting certificate.
Fit and wiring: check mounting points, connector engagement, polarity and cable length on the target vehicle; check operation when reverse is selected and deselected.
Light output: check white rearward light, flicker and failed light sources across the agreed supply voltage range.
Sealing: inspect lens joints, gaskets and cable entries, then perform the agreed water test and check for ingress or condensation. Include these checks in your inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A lamp can fit the mounting hole but have the wrong connector or pin assignment. Water entering through a cable gland or lens joint can damage the driver or leave condensation behind the lens. Vehicle electronics may produce flicker or bulb-failure warnings. Test a fitted sample before accepting the factory's compatibility claim.
A rear-lamp certificate may not support the reversing function of the supplied model. A bright work lamp can also be offered against a reversing-lamp enquiry without matching approval evidence. Compare the actual function, markings and documents, and repeat the agreed checks when the factory changes the lens, driver or housing.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on reversing lamps from China?
Ordinary complete reversing lamps carry 2% duty under 8512 20 00 90, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. A narrowly described suspension is not a general exemption for reversing lamps.
What colour must reversing lamps show?
The MOT manual requires reversing lamps to show white light to the rear. Check the emitted light on a fitted sample, rather than judging the unlit lens.
Can I buy a work lamp as a reversing lamp?
Do not select by brightness alone. Specify the reversing function, request matching road-use approval evidence and check mounting, wiring and operation on the target vehicle.
Are reversing bulbs classified with complete lamps?
Separately imported bulbs and LED light sources are classified outside heading 8512. Confirm their own commodity code rather than using the complete reversing-lamp code.
