Sourcing Vat Textile Dyes from China
Vat textile dyes from China normally carry 6% UK duty; a conditional suspension gives qualifying Vat Blue 4 goods 0%. Match the exact composition to the tariff footnotes and establish UK REACH coverage and chemical labelling before supply in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources vat textile dyes.

Vat dye duty and conditional suspension
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3204 includes vat dyes, including those usable as pigments, and preparations based on them. The supplied vat dye lines carry 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. See the wider textile dyes guide for other dye families.
The other-vat-dyes line has a 0.00 % suspension naming Vat Blue 4 with content of 50% or more by weight. Its footnotes also exclude mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing the listed product. Do not assume a commercial formulation qualifies. The separate Vat Blue 1 salt-mixture line requires a 3:2 potassium-to-sodium salt ratio and combined content of 40 % or more by weight. Confirm the commodity code against the composition.
The tariff attaches veterinary control and import and export waste controls. For veterinary control on a Chinese dye formulation, confirm applicability and the required documents with your customs broker. For notified waste imported into England, the exporter must apply to the dispatch-country authority for consent. Confirm waste status and the applicable import or return-export procedure before shipping.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vat Blue 1 potassium/sodium salt mixture, specified ratio and content | 3204 15 00 25 | 6% | None |
| Vat Blue 4, subject to the suspension footnotes | 3204 15 00 90 | 6% | None |
Specify the dye and the reduction recipe
Specify chemical identity, Colour Index identity, active dye content, additives and supply form. Distinguish unreduced powder or granules from a reduced salt preparation. Agree the target fibre, shade standard, strength tolerance and the recipe used to assess acceptance, including reducing agent, alkali, temperature, oxidation and washing.
Ask for a batch certificate of analysis and retain an approved sample. Trial the dye on your own fabric using the intended process; compare shade, strength, reduction behaviour, dispersion and wash and rubbing fastness. Agree moisture, insoluble matter and packaging acceptance criteria before ordering.
For Great Britain, establish the UK REACH registration position for each substance, including any manufacturer's only-representative coverage. Confirm with HSE whether an English safety data sheet needs to be provided. Chemicals must be labelled and packaged correctly before being placed on the market. Arrange testing and certification support around the actual formulation and end use.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of vat dye powder not qualifying for suspension under 3204 15 00 90, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 6% is £1,920. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,920, so it is £6,784. Import taxes total £8,704; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,920 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match bag labels, batch numbers and analysis certificates to the ordered dye and formulation.
Dyeing performance: compare an arrival sample with the retained standard using the agreed reduction, oxidation and washing recipe.
Physical condition: check for dampness, caking, damaged liners, leaking containers and inconsistent granules or dispersion.
Paperwork: compare the safety data sheet, hazard labels and composition records; verify the evidence supporting any suspension claim.

What goes wrong
A shade match achieved with the supplier's recipe may disappear in your dye house. Changes in strength, dispersion or reduction behaviour can leave uneven colour or surface deposits. Damp powder cakes, while a changed additive package can alter processing even when the dye name stays the same.
Another failure is treating every Vat Blue 4 preparation as duty-free. The recorded suspension has both a content condition and an exclusion for products containing different components. Obtain composition evidence before costing the order, and isolate an arrival batch that fails the agreed swatch test.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on vat dyes from China?
The supplied tariff lines show 6%, with a conditional 0.00 % suspension for qualifying Vat Blue 4 goods. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded.
Can all Vat Blue 4 preparations enter duty-free?
No. The footnotes require content of 50% or more and exclude mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing the listed product. Check the complete formulation.
Do I need UK REACH registration for vat dyes?
For Great Britain, confirm with HSE or your customs broker whether each substance requires UK REACH registration, whether an exemption applies and whether the manufacturer's only representative covers your imports.
How do I check a vat dye batch on arrival?
Match its identity and certificate, inspect packaging and caking, then dye your fabric beside the retained standard using the agreed recipe. Compare shade, strength and fastness before release.
