0% duty, with the casting method checked

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8454 covers converters, ladles, ingot moulds and casting machines used in metallurgy or metal foundries. Every supplied commodity line carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, tariff suspensions or attached import controls.

For a vacuum-only machine, check the other casting machines line, 8454 30 90 00. If the model also casts under positive pressure, ask your customs broker to assess 8454 30 10 00. The table includes machine parts and separately purchased pouring ladles as associated goods; it does not imply that every installation contains them.

Give your broker the operating sequence, drawings and packing list to confirm the commodity code. Identify separately shipped melting furnaces and accessories rather than assuming the machine's code covers them. For the wider heading, see gravity die-casting machines.

Specify the flask, alloy and vacuum cycle

State the alloys, charge capacity, crucible material, melting method and temperature range. Define flask dimensions, perforated or solid flask construction, sealing arrangement and whether pouring is manual or enclosed. Ask the supplier to describe how vacuum reaches the mould and whether the cycle also uses positive pressure or protective gas.

Agree vacuum measurement points, evacuation and holding performance under hot operating conditions, cooling-water needs, electrical supply and pump maintenance. Specify the controller, recipe storage, replacement seals and crucibles. Require a trial using your alloy and representative investment mould, with agreed checks for complete filling, surface finish and porosity.

For new machinery supplied in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority how the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 apply, including the conformity marking, declaration of conformity and English instruction requirements. CE or UKCA marking can be used under the applicable conformity route. Match the declaration to the delivered configuration and discuss the evidence with our testing and certification service.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one compact vacuum investment-casting machine under 8454 30 90 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Hot-cycle vacuum: record evacuation and holding behaviour during a casting trial, check lid and flask seals, and compare the readings with the agreed specification.

Casting result: inspect representative castings for incomplete filling, surface defects and porosity using the agreed inspection method; check that the trial alloy and mould match your brief.

Safety and documents: test guards, lid interlocks and emergency stops; check splash protection, conformity marking, the matching declaration and English operating and maintenance instructions.

Arrival condition: inspect chamber surfaces, crucible supports, hoses, cooling connections and electrical terminals for transport damage; reconcile accessories and spares with the packing list before commissioning. Use our quality inspection guide to plan the checks.

What goes wrong

A cold vacuum demonstration can conceal seals that leak when hot. An unsuitable flask adaptor can restrict evacuation through the investment mould, while an undersized charge or unsuitable crucible can make the promised casting result unrepeatable. Treat pump specifications as supporting information and verify the complete casting cycle.

Other problems include cooling arrangements that do not suit the workshop, substituted controllers, fragile crucibles damaged in transit and missing maintenance instructions. Agree the trial, packing, commissioning support and replacement parts before shipment, then repeat the agreed acceptance checks after installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on vacuum investment-casting machines from China?

The supplied tariff record for 1 October 2026 shows 0% duty across heading 8454, including casting machines and parts, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the machine's exact commodity code.

Which commodity code applies to a vacuum investment-casting machine?

Check 8454 30 90 00 for a vacuum-only machine and ask your broker to assess 8454 30 10 00 if it also casts under positive pressure. Provide the operating sequence rather than relying on the supplier's product name.

Is a CE certificate enough to buy the machine?

Ask for the declaration of conformity matching the delivered machine, English instructions and supporting safety documents. Inspect the marking and test guards, interlocks and emergency stops on the actual machine.

How should I test vacuum performance before shipment?

Witness a hot casting cycle with your alloy and representative mould. Record vacuum behaviour at agreed measurement points and inspect the resulting castings. A cold pump demonstration alone does not verify casting performance.
