Sourcing unexposed holographic plates from China

Unexposed holographic plates from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant lines. Classification depends on size and colour use. For GB business sales, UK REACH safe-use information duties apply where qualifying articles contain Candidate List substances above the stated threshold. Cambridge China Bridge sources unexposed holographic plates.

UK duty on unexposed holographic plates

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 3701 covers flat, sensitised, unexposed photographic plates and film made from materials other than paper, paperboard or textiles. This guide concerns unexposed holographic recording plates; see the photographic and X-ray film guide for the wider heading.

The relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. Plates with any side exceeding 255 mm have a separate line; the remaining distinctions include colour photography and other uses.

Confirm the commodity code using the plate dimensions, recording medium and intended colour use. The table separates coating types that can share the other-plates code; coating chemistry alone does not settle classification.

Specify the recording layer and laser compatibility

Specify silver-halide or photopolymer recording material, substrate, plate dimensions, thickness and coated side. Agree the recording wavelength, reflection or transmission application, exposure procedure and processing method. Test factory samples with your intended laser and processing materials before approving the batch. Ask for storage instructions, batch identification and the expiry date.

For GB sales, obtain coating composition information and assess the product's UK REACH status. If supplied as an article containing a Candidate List substance above 0.1% by weight, provide business recipients with sufficient safe-use information, including the substance name. If hazardous processing chemicals are supplied for workplace use, safety data sheets are required.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 255 unexposed monochrome silver-halide holographic plates, illustrative under 3701 99 00 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £255 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,255. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,255, so it is £651. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Recording test: expose samples from different batches using the agreed setup; compare reconstructed brightness, clarity and background haze with the approved sample.

Substrate and coating: inspect sacrificial samples under suitable lighting for chipped edges, scratches, coating gaps and contamination; check dimensions and the coated-side identification.

Light protection: check sealed, light-tight inner packs and cushioning around plates; open samples only under the lighting conditions specified by the supplier.

Batch and storage: match carton and inner-pack batch details to the test records; check expiry dates, dry cartons and compliance with the agreed storage conditions.

What goes wrong

A coating that does not match the recording wavelength can give weak results even when the glass looks sound. Changed exposure or processing conditions can make a replacement batch behave differently. Compare batches using the same setup before accepting a substitution.

Heat, age and light leaks can fog the recording layer; handling can scratch coatings or chip glass. Agree packing, storage and batch-test acceptance before dispatch. Use the quality inspection guide to organise the checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on unexposed holographic plates from China?

The relevant heading 3701 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

How do I choose holographic plates for my laser?

Specify the recording wavelength, reflection or transmission application and processing method. Approve a sample recorded with your intended setup.

Do processing chemicals supplied with the plates need safety data sheets?

Safety data sheets are required where hazardous chemicals are supplied for workplace use. Assess any accompanying chemicals separately from the plates.

How should unexposed holographic plates be packed?

Agree sealed, light-tight inner packs, protection between plates and cushioning against chipped edges. Check storage instructions and expiry dates before dispatch.
