Sourcing warp-knit geotextiles from China
Uncoated synthetic warp-knitted geotextiles from China normally pay 8% UK duty; a tightly specified polyester suspension gives a 0% to 8% range. For construction use, confirm the applicable product standard and performance declaration before supply. Cambridge China Bridge sources uncoated warp-knitted geotextiles.

UK duty on uncoated warp-knitted geotextiles
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6005 covers warp-knit fabrics, including those made on galloon knitting machines, other than fabrics of headings 6001 to 6004. This guide concerns uncoated synthetic warp-knitted geotextiles supplied as fabric. Confirm the actual yarn and knitted construction rather than relying on the supplier's description of its intended use.
The selected synthetic-fibre lines carry 8% duty on goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures or attached import controls. Under 6005 36 00 00, a 0.00 % suspension applies only to the listed weft-inserted warp-knitted polyester material, with width from 1.5m to 1.65m and length from 8.000m to 16.000m. It excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing that material. Do not assume an ordinary geotextile roll qualifies.
Give your broker the fibre composition, width, construction, finishing details and a sample to confirm the commodity code. The rows distinguish unbleached or bleached, dyed, different-coloured yarns and printed fabric; they are classification alternatives, not interchangeable specifications. See the wider warp-knit fabrics guide for the heading's other products.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uncoated synthetic warp-knitted geotextile, unbleached or bleached | 6005 36 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Uncoated synthetic warp-knitted geotextile, dyed | 6005 37 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Uncoated synthetic warp-knitted geotextile, different-coloured yarns | 6005 38 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Uncoated synthetic warp-knitted geotextile, printed | 6005 39 00 00 | 8% | None |
Specify the soil function and knitted structure
State whether the fabric is intended for reinforcement, filtration, separation or erosion control. Specify the polymer, yarn construction, stitch pattern, any inserted load-bearing yarns, mass per unit area, usable width and roll length. State explicitly that the fabric is uncoated. Keep an approved sample showing the mesh openings and edges, and agree tolerances before production.
Ask the project designer to set the required tensile strength and elongation in each direction, opening size, water flow and durability for the intended installation. For reinforcement, agree the evidence needed for sustained loading and installation damage. A fabric weight or a photograph does not establish these properties. Arrange testing and certification against the agreed specification.
For construction supply in Great Britain, identify the applicable product standard and conformity route before ordering. Under the CE route, manufacturers of products covered by a harmonised standard or with a European Technical Assessment must draw up a declaration of performance. Legitimately CE-marked construction products can be supplied in Great Britain without adding UKCA marking. Ask for documents identifying the exact product and intended use.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 30,000 m of dyed, uncoated polyester warp-knitted geotextile in rolls under 6005 37 00 00, invoiced at £21,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £22,800. Duty at 8% is £1,824. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,624, so it is £4,924.80. Import taxes total £6,748.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,824 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Construction: compare the yarns, knitted loops, inserted yarns and mesh openings with the approved sample; check that no coating or backing has been substituted.
Dimensions: measure usable width, roll length and mass per unit area across sampled rolls; check distorted edges, uneven winding and damaged cores.
Performance: match tensile, elongation, opening-size and water-flow results to the agreed fabric and test direction; retain labelled batch samples.
Traceability: match roll labels, batch references, packing list and performance documents. Inspect wrapping for tears, moisture and dirt before unloading; use an agreed inspection plan.

What goes wrong
Broken yarns, missed stitches and distorted openings can escape a check based only on roll weight. A replacement yarn or altered stitch pattern can produce a similar-looking fabric with different strength or filtration behaviour. Narrow rolls, short lengths and crushed edges also disrupt laying plans. Require approval before changing the yarn, construction or finishing process.
A report for another fabric, or strength results from the wrong direction, can leave the delivered material unsuitable for the project. Match the documents and retained sample to the supplied batch, and hold disputed rolls aside before installation. Importers must not supply construction products in Great Britain if they have reason to believe the applicable requirements are not met.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on uncoated warp-knitted geotextiles from China?
The selected synthetic-fibre lines carry 8%, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. A narrowly specified polyester suspension under 6005 36 00 00 gives 0.00 % only when its conditions are met.
Does uncoated polyester geotextile qualify for duty suspension?
Not automatically. The suspension specifies weft-inserted warp-knitted polyester material and exact width and length conditions. Ask your broker to compare the supplied material with the full tariff description.
What should I test before buying warp-knitted geotextile?
Agree tests for the intended soil function: tensile strength and elongation by direction, opening size, water flow and durability. For reinforcement, also agree evidence for sustained loading and installation damage.
Does a CE-marked geotextile also need UKCA marking?
Legitimately CE-marked construction products can be supplied in Great Britain without additional UKCA marking. Check the applicable standard, intended use and declaration of performance for the exact fabric.
