Duty on framed and unframed mirrors

Heading 7009 covers glass mirrors, whether or not framed, including vehicle rear-view mirrors. For ordinary two-way glass mirrors, the relevant lines are other unframed mirrors and framed mirrors. The table separates observation and display applications using those same tariff lines.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, both relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. Neither has a listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control in the supplied tariff record. The heading's vehicle-mirror suspension does not apply to these ordinary panels.

Confirm the commodity code using the coating, construction, frame and intended use. For the wider mirror heading, see glass mirror tiles. For ordinary sheet mirrors, see our unframed glass mirror sheets guide. For solar applications, see our unmounted solar mirror sourcing guide. For decorative finishes, see sourcing antique mirror glass.

Specify the optical effect and installation

Describe the product as partially reflective glass and state whether it is for an observation window or a concealed display. Agree glass thickness, dimensions, edge finish, coating face, visible light transmission, reflectance and colour tint. Approve a physical sample with the intended lighting or display behind it. For infinity mirror projects, see our infinity mirror sourcing guide.

The observation effect depends on the lighting difference across the glass. Test what people can see from each side when room lighting changes. Specify the glass construction, supports and installation instructions for the actual location. Consumer mirrors supplied in Great Britain must be safe under general product safety rules; review breakage and mounting risks before approving production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative stock order: 1,200 small framed two-way glass display mirrors under 7009 92 00 00, invoiced at £36,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £40,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £40,000, so it is £8,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Optical performance: compare reflection, transmitted image, tint and distortion with the approved sample under the agreed lighting arrangement.

Coating: check for scratches, pinholes, patchiness and edge damage; confirm that the coating face is identified for installation.

Glass and mounting: measure dimensions and thickness, inspect polished edges and corners, and check the frame, supports and fitting instructions against the order.

Packing and arrival: check separators, corner protection and restraint inside the crate; record damaged packaging before unpacking and inspect exposed edges for chips.

What goes wrong

A panel can look acceptable as a mirror yet transmit too little light for the display or observation task. Tint can alter display colours, while coating defects become conspicuous against a bright background. Reject samples that have only been demonstrated under the supplier's preferred lighting.

An observation panel can lose its privacy effect when the viewing side becomes brighter. Coating scratches, chipped edges and pressure from an unsuitable frame can also spoil the installation. Agree the lighting test, mounting arrangement and packing method before production, and repeat the optical comparison on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on two-way glass mirrors from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for other unframed mirrors under 7009 91 00 90 and framed mirrors under 7009 92 00 00, with no listed trade remedy on either line.

Do two-way mirrors provide privacy in any lighting?

The observation effect depends on the lighting difference across the glass. Test visibility from each side under the intended room lighting, including when that lighting changes.

What should I specify for a mirror with a display behind it?

Agree transmission, reflectance, tint, coating face and glass dimensions. Approve a sample using the intended display and ambient lighting, checking brightness and colour.

How do I check two-way mirrors when they arrive?

Record crate damage, inspect edges and coating, measure against the order and compare the optical effect with the approved sample. Check the frame and fitting instructions before installation.
