Duty and classification for twin-lens reflex cameras

Heading 9006 covers photographic cameras other than cinematographic cameras, photographic flash apparatus and relevant parts. For twin-lens reflex film cameras, confirm the film width before choosing between the other-camera lines. The table includes separately ordered camera parts and electronic flashes. See the wider medium-format film camera guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all supplied lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties or suspensions. The supplied record attaches a DCMS Export Licence control. Official guidance says cultural objects have no import licensing requirements in Great Britain. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the tariff entry applies, particularly to vintage stock or subsequent exports.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual camera, film width and separately supplied accessories. Do not classify a camera solely from the supplier's description of it as a twin-lens reflex model.

Specify the linked lenses and film mechanism

Agree the film format, image area, taking-lens focal length and aperture range, shutter settings, focusing range and whether the viewing and taking lenses move together. Specify the focusing screen, waist-level hood, close-focus framing guidance, film counter, winding mechanism and flash connection. State whether cameras are new, refurbished or used.

Consumer cameras supplied in Great Britain must be safe. Include checks for sharp housing edges, secure strap attachments and trapping points around the folding hood. Agree English loading and operating instructions, replacement light seals and access to shutter servicing. Retain records identifying your supplier so the goods' origins can be traced.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 mechanical twin-lens reflex film cameras under 9006 59 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Focus alignment: compare the viewing-screen focus with the developed image at near and distant subjects. Check focus across the frame and inspect both lenses for haze, fungus, scratches and loose mounts.

Shutter and aperture: measure shutter operation against the agreed settings, repeat releases and inspect aperture blades for sticking or oil. Test flash synchronisation if the camera has a flash connection.

Film path and light seals: load the specified film, wind through it and check frame spacing, counter operation and the pressure plate. Develop test exposures to detect scratches, overlapping frames and light leaks.

Arrival condition: inspect hood hinges, mirror, focusing screen, back latch, strap fittings and packaging for movement or moisture damage. Repeat sample shooting after delivery and compare results with the approved sample.

What goes wrong

The viewing screen can show a sharp subject while the taking lens records a blurred image. Misaligned lens movement, an incorrectly seated screen or a disturbed mirror can hide this fault during a dry demonstration. Close subjects can also be framed incorrectly because the viewing lens and taking lens occupy different positions.

Sticky shutters, uneven winding and worn light seals can spoil a roll despite a clean exterior. Refurbished stock may mix replacement parts with different wear or adjustment. Agree acceptance criteria using developed film, retain the approved sample and record faults by camera serial or batch reference.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on twin-lens reflex film cameras from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty on all relevant lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties or suspensions.

Which commodity code covers a twin-lens reflex film camera?

Check the film width. Medium-format models generally fall within 9006 59 00 00; non-disposable cameras for 35 mm film have 9006 53 80 00. Confirm classification for the actual model.

How do I check that the viewing and taking lenses focus together?

Focus through the viewing screen on near and distant subjects, expose film without changing the setting and compare the developed images. A sharp screen image alone does not prove taking-lens alignment.

What paperwork should I keep for selling these cameras?

Keep records identifying your supplier for traceability. Also retain the agreed specification, inspection results, film-test images and instructions as purchasing and quality records.
