Sourcing tris(2,4-DTBP) phosphite from China

Tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite from China carries 6% duty under the candidate residual phosphite code. The listed suspension does not cover it. For Great Britain, settle UK REACH registration where required before importing. Cambridge China Bridge sources tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite.

Duty on the unmixed phosphite

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2920 covers esters of other inorganic acids of non-metals and their salts, including phosphite esters. For unmixed tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite, 2920 29 00 90 is the candidate residual phosphite line. The table shows purchasing forms and uses of the same substance under that line.

The supplied China tariff data gives 6% duty and records no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. The line's 0% suspension names other substances, excluding this product. It also displays an export control for waste. Environment Agency guidance for England says waste shipment controls apply only to waste; ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for your China consignment if its waste status is uncertain.

Give your broker the full chemical identity, composition and physical form to confirm the commodity code. Do not assume that a formulated antioxidant blend shares the unmixed substance's classification. See the wider carbonate and phosphite guide for the rest of the heading.

Specify the substance and its processing behaviour

Specify tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite by its full chemical name and chemical identity number. Agree assay, moisture, acidity, colour, residual impurities, powder or granular form, particle size and the analytical methods. Request a certificate of analysis for each batch. Approve material through a trial in your own polymer and dosing equipment, checking dispersion, colour and processing behaviour.

For Great Britain, ask HSE to confirm the UK REACH registration requirements for the substance and your annual import volume, including whether coverage through an only representative is available. Registration is per substance, per legal entity. Establish the applicable route before ordering, rather than relying on a supplier's general statement that its chemicals are registered.

Chemicals must be labelled and packaged correctly before being placed on the market under the GB classification, labelling and packaging rules. A safety data sheet is required when a hazardous chemical is supplied for workplace use. Request the English safety data sheet and agree sealed packaging and storage conditions suitable for the supplied grade.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a pallet of sealed packs of the unmixed substance under 2920 29 00 90, invoiced at £3,500 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,000. Duty at 6% is £360. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,360, so it is £1,272. Import taxes total £1,632; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £360 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the purchase specification, pack labels, batch numbers and certificate of analysis; confirm whether the material is unmixed or contains other additives.

Analysis: independently sample the shipment and check assay, moisture, acidity and colour against the agreed limits and methods.

Physical form: compare particle size, dust, caking and flow with the approved sample; trial dispersion and dosing before releasing a disputed batch.

Packing and documents: check seals, liners, damage and batch traceability; compare the safety data sheet and applicable labels with the actual material. Use the inspection guide to plan the checks.

What goes wrong

A supplier substitutes an antioxidant blend for the unmixed phosphite, changes powder to granules without approval, or supplies a certificate that does not identify the delivered batch. Material can meet the assay specification yet fail your process trial because its physical form or dispersion differs from the approved sample.

Investigate damp packs, caking, colour changes and inconsistent dosing before using the lot. Hold disputed stock separately, compare retained samples and agree independent testing. Record the chemical identity, analytical methods, packaging and approved physical form in the purchase specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on this phosphite from China?

The supplied tariff data gives 6% under candidate code 2920 29 00 90, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Its named-substance suspension does not cover this phosphite.

Does UK REACH apply to imports of this substance?

Ask HSE to confirm the UK REACH registration requirements for imports into Great Britain based on the substance and your annual import volume, including whether coverage through an only representative is available. Confirm the route for your importing business.

Can I order an antioxidant blend instead?

Specify it separately. Ask for the full composition and test it in your process. Have your broker confirm its classification instead of reusing the unmixed phosphite's code.

What should I test when the shipment arrives?

Check batch identity, assay, moisture, acidity, colour and physical form against the agreed specification. Inspect seals and caking, and compare dosing and dispersion with the approved sample.
