Sourcing triphenylphosphine from China

Budget for 6% UK duty on triphenylphosphine from China under the proposed residual code, with no trade remedy shown. Named suspensions do not establish relief for this product. Check UK REACH registration coverage and chemical classification before import and supply. Cambridge China Bridge sources triphenylphosphine.

Triphenylphosphine duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2931 covers other organo-inorganic compounds. The supplied data has no dedicated triphenylphosphine line. The proposed residual line, 2931 49 80 90, carries 6% third-country duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure shown. The table therefore contains only the relevant residual line.

That line also carries named tariff suspensions. The supplied notes do not establish a suspension for triphenylphosphine, and a suspension note is truncated, so confirm eligibility before claiming relief. The tariff attaches an export control for waste. Waste shipment controls apply only when the material is waste; ask your customs broker to confirm the requirement for the proposed shipment from China.

Confirm the commodity code using the substance identity, composition and supplied form. Keep triphenylphosphine separate from triphenyl phosphate and its oxide when preparing the classification brief. For the wider heading, see the dimethyl methylphosphonate guide.

Specify triphenylphosphine purity and oxide content

Specify the substance identity, intended process, assay method and acceptance limits for triphenylphosphine oxide, water and residual solvents. Agree whether assay is reported on an as-received or dry basis. Describe the required crystal or powder form and pack size. Request a batch certificate of analysis and retain an approved sample for comparison.

For Great Britain, UK REACH registration generally applies when imports of a substance reach one tonne per year. Confirm the registration arrangements for your supply before ordering. Importers must classify, label and package chemicals before placing them on the GB market. A safety data sheet is required when a hazardous chemical is supplied for workplace use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 kilograms of triphenylphosphine under 2931 49 80 90, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £980 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,480. Duty at 6% is £208.80. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,688.80, so it is £737.76. Import taxes total £946.56; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £208.80 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the container labels, batch certificate and purchase specification to triphenylphosphine.

Analysis: check assay, oxide content, water and residual solvents against the agreed limits and test methods.

Condition: inspect seals, liners and containers for damage, moisture entry, caking or unexpected colour.

Traceability: match batch identifiers across packs and documents, retain a sample and compare arrival results with the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A purity headline can hide differences in oxide content, moisture or residual solvent. Results are difficult to compare when the supplier changes the test method or reporting basis. Treat unexplained colour changes, caking and damaged seals as reasons to hold the batch pending investigation.

Similar names can lead to the wrong chemical being quoted or shipped. Confirm identity before accepting a sample. A factory analysis certificate does not establish your UK REACH registration arrangements or replace classification and supply documents.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on triphenylphosphine from China?

The proposed residual code 2931 49 80 90 carries 6% duty in the supplied tariff data, with no trade remedy shown. Confirm classification and any suspension eligibility before shipment.

Do I need UK REACH registration for triphenylphosphine?

Registration generally applies at one tonne per substance per year imported into Great Britain. Confirm the arrangements covering your supply before ordering.

What should a triphenylphosphine certificate of analysis show?

Ask for batch identity, assay and its reporting basis, oxide content, water, residual solvents and the agreed test methods. Compare results with your purchase specification.

Is triphenylphosphine the same as triphenyl phosphate?

No. Specify the full substance identity and composition. Do not accept triphenyl phosphate or triphenylphosphine oxide against a triphenylphosphine order.
