Snowplough duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, snowploughs and snowblowers under 8430 20 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or attached import control for this line.

Heading 8430 includes snowploughs alongside earthworking, boring, piling and compacting machinery. The table shows snowplough configurations sharing the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. See the wider machinery guide.

Confirm the commodity code against the complete attachment specification and what is actually shipped. Describe the mounting system, blade operation and supplied components rather than relying on the supplier's general description.

Specify the tractor interface and blade

Name the tractor model and agree mounting drawings, pin and bracket dimensions, attachment mass, lifting capacity and clearance throughout steering and lifting. Specify blade width, working width when angled, cutting-edge material, replaceable wear parts, skid shoes and the obstacle-release mechanism.

For hydraulic adjustment, agree operating pressure, required flow, couplings, hose routing and control arrangement. Ask for a demonstration on the intended tractor or a matching mounting fixture, including blade angling, lifting and obstacle release.

For Great Britain, the machinery rules cover interchangeable equipment fitted by an operator to give a tractor a new function. Conformity requires essential health and safety requirements, the relevant assessment, a declaration and conformity marking. Ask for the technical documentation and English operating instructions for the exact attachment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative batch of tractor-mounted snowploughs under 8430 20 00 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £22,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £22,000, so it is £4,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Mounting: compare delivered brackets, pins and locking devices with the approved drawings; check fit, retention and clearance on the intended tractor.

Blade and frame: inspect welds, distortion, cutting-edge fixings, skid shoes and coating damage; confirm replacement edges match the agreed design.

Hydraulics and release: check leaks, coupling compatibility and hose chafing through the full movement; test blade adjustment and obstacle release under controlled conditions.

Documents and arrival: match the attachment identification to its declaration, marking and English manual; photograph transit damage and check loose fittings before assembly.

What goes wrong

A bracket can fit the tractor but leave insufficient clearance when the blade is raised or angled. Poor hose routing can pinch a hose, while an unsuitable cutting edge can damage the surface being cleared. A release mechanism that sticks can transfer an obstacle impact into the mounting frame.

Freeze the mounting drawings and wear-part specification before production. Compare the production attachment with the tested configuration, and agree replacement pins, hoses and edges. Use a product-specific inspection brief and review the conformity documents before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on tractor-mounted snowploughs from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for snowploughs under 8430 20 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, read on 1 October 2026.

Does the tractor's conformity cover the snowplough?

Do not rely on the tractor's documents alone. Machinery rules cover interchangeable equipment; check the snowplough's own declaration, marking and instructions.

What should I send the factory to confirm tractor fit?

Send the tractor model, mounting drawings, lifting capacity and hydraulic specification. Agree pin dimensions, locking arrangements and clearance through the full movement.

What should I inspect before using the snowplough?

Check mounting retention, blade fixings, welds, hoses, leaks and obstacle release. Compare the attachment and supplied wear parts with the approved drawings and manual.
