Tracing paper duty and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, tracing paper under 4806 30 00 00 carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line.
Heading 4806 covers vegetable parchment, greaseproof paper, tracing paper, glassine and other glazed transparent or translucent papers in rolls or sheets. Only the tracing-paper line is shown here. See the wider heading guide for the neighbouring paper families.
Confirm the commodity code using the fibre composition, any coating or impregnation, and the supplied form. Coated or impregnated paper can fall outside this heading. Confirm with the Office for Product Safety and Standards whether paper made from virgin pulp falls within the UK Timber Regulations and what timber due diligence the business first placing it on the GB market should carry out.

Specify translucency and drawing performance
State whether you need sheets or reels, the dimensions, grammage, shade, surface finish and packing format. Agree a physical reference sample for translucency: the underlying drawing should remain legible without distracting haze, streaks or pinholes.
Test the sample with the pencils, pens and erasers you intend to use. Check line sharpness, ink drying, smudging and surface damage after erasing. For printing, trial the actual printer and feed settings before approving bulk production.
Ask the mill for the virgin and recovered fibre mix, pulp source, species and country of harvest. Keep the supporting information with the order. Timber-product traders must retain records of their suppliers and the traders they sell to.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 reels of tracing paper under 4806 30 00 00, invoiced at £2,800 free on board, with £150 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,950. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,950, so it is £590. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Appearance: compare samples from different packs against the approved paper over the same drawing and light source; check haze, specks, streaks and pinholes.
Dimensions and grammage: measure sheet size or reel width and check grammage against the purchase specification; look for uneven cutting and damaged edges.
Drawing performance: repeat pencil, ink and eraser trials on production samples; check feathering, smearing and surface scuffing.
Packing and moisture: inspect wrapping, reel cores and carton corners; look for damp patches, blocking, curl and crushed sheets.

What goes wrong
A sample can trace clearly while the production lot looks cloudy or varies between packs. Ink may spread on a different surface finish, and repeated erasing can roughen the paper. Record the approved sample and practical drawing tests in the order specification.
Moisture and crushed packing can leave sheets curled or reel edges unusable. Photograph arrival damage before unpacking and compare affected packs with protected samples. Missing pulp-source information can also leave timber due diligence incomplete.
