Sourcing thiophene from China

Listed thiophene derivatives carry 6% UK duty from China, reduced to 0% where a listed suspension applies. Thiophene itself has no separate line in the supplied extract, so confirm its code. Confirm your UK REACH registration position and any only-representative coverage with HSE. Cambridge China Bridge sources thiophene.

Thiophene identity determines the tariff line

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2934 covers nucleic acids and other heterocyclic compounds. The table selects named thiophene-family derivatives from the supplied extract. These are distinct substances, not alternative descriptions of thiophene itself. For the wider heading, see thiazoles and other heterocyclics.

The selected Chinese-origin lines carry 6% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure shown. Suspensions reduce the named bromobenzoylthiophene, tetrahydrothiophene dioxide and alcohol hydrate lines to 0%; their footnotes exclude mixtures, preparations and products containing different components. The thienothiopyran alcohol line has no suspension and requires the stated identity and purity. Do not transfer a derivative's suspension to thiophene.

The tariff attaches dangerous-chemical and waste export-control notices to these lines, plus a controlled-drug import notice to 2934 99 90 48. Confirm their applicability with your customs broker. The extract does not supply a line for thiophene itself: give the broker its chemical identity, composition and intended use to confirm the commodity code.

Specify thiophene identity, purity and use

State whether you need thiophene itself or a named derivative. Agree the chemical name, structure, chemical identifier, assay method, water content, impurity profile and any solvent or stabiliser present. For substituted derivatives, specify the substitution pattern; for the listed alcohols, agree the stereochemical and hydrate forms. Ask for a batch certificate of analysis and an English safety data sheet.

For Great Britain, confirm with HSE whether UK REACH registration is required for your annual imports and whether an only-representative arrangement can cover them. Classification and labelling must be carried out by someone scientifically competent. Confirm these arrangements before ordering rather than treating the factory's certificate of analysis as compliance evidence.

The tariff's controlled-drug notice on the alcohol hydrate does not establish that every thiophene product is controlled. Confirm that exact substance with the broker and Home Office; importing controlled drugs requires a licence application. If a substance is on the prior informed consent list, importers must report annual quantities to HSE. Confirm the listed status of the exact chemical.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 kg of the specified thienothiopyran alcohol under 2934 99 90 19, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £990 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,490. Duty at 6% is £149.40. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,639.40, so it is £527.88. Import taxes total £677.28; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £149.40 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the label, certificate and agreed structure; distinguish thiophene from tetrahydrothiophene dioxide and substituted derivatives.

Composition: independently check assay, water and agreed impurities against the purchase specification, using an appropriate chromatographic method.

Batch evidence: match container batch references to the certificate and laboratory sample; investigate changes in the impurity profile.

Packing: check closures, seals, leakage and container condition against the agreed packing specification and safety data sheet.

What goes wrong

A quotation says only 'thiophene', while the delivered material is a derivative, solvent mixture or different substitution pattern. A high assay result can conceal an unsuitable impurity profile or excess water. Match the specification to the actual batch and hold material that fails the agreed tests. Check unfamiliar chromatographic peaks before using it in your process.

Another failure is assuming that a named derivative's duty suspension covers the parent chemical or a mixture. Recovered solvent also needs a separate waste-status check: waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. The tariff attaches a waste export-control notice; for material arriving from China, ask the broker to confirm whether waste import requirements apply before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on thiophene from China?

The listed derivatives carry 6%, with qualifying suspensions to 0%. The supplied extract has no separate line for thiophene itself, so its code and duty need confirmation.

Does the thiophene duty suspension cover mixtures?

The selected suspension footnotes exclude mixtures, preparations and products containing different components. Check the exact substance and composition before claiming relief.

Do I need UK REACH registration for thiophene?

Confirm with HSE whether UK REACH registration is required for your annual imports or whether an only-representative arrangement can cover them. Confirm coverage for the exact substance before ordering.

What should a thiophene batch certificate show?

Ask for chemical identity, batch reference, assay method and result, water content and agreed impurities. Match the certificate to the delivered containers and verify the batch independently.
