Sourcing tetrasodium pyrophosphate from China

Tetrasodium pyrophosphate from China falls within the other polyphosphates line, carrying 4% UK duty with no listed trade remedy or suspension. Food use needs an approved additive used within its conditions; agree the chemical form and grade before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources tetrasodium pyrophosphate.

Duty on tetrasodium pyrophosphate

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2835 covers phosphinates, phosphonates, phosphates and polyphosphates. The relevant other-polyphosphates line, 2835 39 00 00, carries 4% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows purchasing variants sharing this line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to this line. Confirm their application with your customs broker, particularly for recovered or off-specification material. For a China-to-England shipment subject to waste notification controls, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved.

Give your broker the chemical identity, hydration form, composition and intended use to confirm the commodity code. A formulated blend needs its own classification assessment. See the sodium acid pyrophosphate guide for related coverage of the wider heading.

Specify the form, assay and intended use

Write tetrasodium pyrophosphate explicitly in the purchase specification. State whether you want anhydrous or hydrated material, food or technical grade, powder characteristics and packing. Agree whether the assay is reported on the supplied material or a dry basis, together with moisture, insoluble matter and test methods.

For food use, check the additive's approval for the intended food and its conditions of use. A supplier's food-grade description is not sufficient evidence. Request batch analysis for the applicable purity specification, including relevant impurities. For detergent manufacture, check the finished product's phosphorus restrictions before selecting the formulation.

For industrial imports, settle your UK REACH position before ordering and confirm the applicable requirements with the Health and Safety Executive. Ask for a safety data sheet and agree independent testing and certification checks against the purchasing specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of palletised technical-grade tetrasodium pyrophosphate bags under 2835 39 00 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,720 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,720. Duty at 4% is £188.80. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,908.80, so it is £981.76. Import taxes total £1,170.56; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £188.80 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the chemical name, hydration form, grade and batch references on bags, order documents and certificates.

Analysis: sample across the batch and compare assay, moisture, insoluble matter and agreed impurity results with the specification.

Packing: check inner liners, seals, bag damage, damp patches and caking; record discrepancies before warehouse release.

Performance: trial a retained sample in your intended process and compare dissolution and residue with the approved sample.

What goes wrong

Similar names cause purchasing errors: sodium acid pyrophosphate or sodium tripolyphosphate can be offered against a tetrasodium pyrophosphate enquiry. Hydrated material can also be compared with an anhydrous quotation without aligning the assay basis. Confirm identity and analytical reporting before accepting a substitution.

A certificate can describe a different batch, while damp packing leaves powder caked on arrival. Food-grade claims may lack evidence for the intended application. Agree sampling, acceptance criteria and how disputed batches will be held before shipment; use the inspection guide to brief the inspector.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on tetrasodium pyrophosphate from China?

The relevant other-polyphosphates line, 2835 39 00 00, carries 4% duty in the supplied tariff reading, with no listed trade remedy or suspension. Confirm classification for your actual composition.

Can I use Chinese food-grade tetrasodium pyrophosphate in food?

Check approval for the intended food, conditions of use and the applicable purity specification. Obtain batch analysis rather than relying on a food-grade statement.

Is tetrasodium pyrophosphate the same as sodium acid pyrophosphate?

Treat them as different purchasing identities. Specify the full chemical name, hydration form and grade, and check that the supplier's certificate describes the material ordered.

What should I check when the bags arrive?

Match batch references and grade to the certificate, inspect liners and seals for moisture damage, check caking, and sample the material for analysis and a process trial.
