Duty depends on recipe and processing

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 1902 covers pasta and noodles, whether uncooked, cooked or otherwise prepared. For sweet potato glass noodles, distinguish uncooked products from other dried or prepared noodles. The selected Chinese-origin lines have standard duties of 6% plus £8.10 to £20 per 100 kg. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on these lines.

Each selected line lists an autonomous suspension at 0%. Its footnote excludes mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products. Ask your customs broker to confirm eligibility for the actual recipe before costing at zero duty. The illustrative order assumes that confirmation; the standard duty is compound, rather than a plain percentage.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches organic-product and genetically modified organism import controls to these lines, and veterinary control to the selected other dried and prepared lines. Confirm the applicable requirements with your customs broker using the complete recipe, including rice and any animal-based seasoning. Provide ingredients, processing details and packing information when confirming the commodity code.

Specify the starch recipe and cooked texture

Specify the sweet potato starch proportion and every other starch, additive and seasoning. Agree round or flat strands, thickness, cut length, bundle format, dry appearance and acceptable breakage. Approve a cooked sample using your kitchen's soaking and cooking method, checking firmness, sticking, cooking-water cloudiness and texture after holding.

Agree moisture, shelf life, storage conditions, pack size and seal performance with the factory. Food must be safe and legal before import into Great Britain; confirm any food-business registration requirements with the relevant local authority. For organic orders, confirm the attached import control with your customs broker and ask an approved UK organic control body which requirements apply.

Inspection checklist

Recipe: compare the production ingredient declaration and batch records with the approved starch blend, including seasoning sachets.

Cooking: repeat the approved preparation method and compare strand firmness, sticking, breakage and holding texture with the retained sample.

Dry condition: check moisture against the agreed specification and inspect for damp bundles, mould, foreign matter and unusual odours.

Packs and labels: check seals, net weight and batch identification. Check English ingredients, dates, storage instructions and UK address against the approved artwork; allergens must be listed and highlighted.

What goes wrong

A changed starch blend can turn firm strands into soft, sticky noodles or leave excessive sediment in the cooking water. Weak drying or leaking seals can leave damp bundles, while tight packing and rough handling can increase broken strands. Compare arrival samples with the approved recipe and cooked sample before accepting a repeat order.

Seasoning changes can introduce undeclared allergens, and an organic description can be printed before import-control arrangements are settled. Approve the complete recipe and artwork before production. Use our inspection guide and see the mung bean glass noodle guide for the related product family within this heading.
