Sourcing suspension U-bolts from China

Suspension U-bolts from China fall within heading 7318, with a duty range of 0% to 0% in the supplied tariff data. Confirm the headless-bolt classification against material and tensile strength. Importers selling consumer vehicle parts are responsible for their safety. Cambridge China Bridge sources suspension U-bolts.

Duty and classification for suspension U-bolts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 7318 covers iron or steel fasteners. Suspension U-bolts should be checked against the headless-bolt branches, distinguishing stainless steel from other steel and the declared tensile strength. The table also includes separately imported matching nuts; these are not U-bolts. For security fasteners, see our security shear bolt sourcing guide.

The supplied tariff data shows 0% duty for goods from China on every listed line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or attached import control recorded. This tariff position does not establish that a suspension part is suitable or safe for a particular vehicle.

Give your customs broker the drawing, material specification, tensile-strength evidence and packing details to confirm the commodity code. For related suspension components, see suspension control arms.

Specify the axle fit and clamping assembly

Specify the vehicle application, axle profile, round or square bend, inside width, bend radius, leg length, rod diameter, thread pitch and usable thread length. State whether dimensions are measured before or after coating. Include the spring plate and nut arrangement in the drawing so the factory can trial-fit the complete assembly.

Agree the steel grade, finished-part mechanical properties, heat treatment, coating and batch identification. Ask for test evidence tied to the finished bent bolts, rather than only the incoming steel. Agree tightening instructions with the vehicle application engineer, including the thread lubrication condition.

For consumer vehicle parts, importers are responsible for safety and applicable labelling requirements. The vehicle aftermarket safety code places its specified responsibilities on an independent importer where imported parts have a potential safety defect.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of heavy-vehicle suspension U-bolts under 7318 15 48 90, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,800, so it is £960. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Geometry: measure inside width, leg spacing, bend profile and thread length against the approved drawing; trial-fit the intended axle and spring plate.

Threads and nuts: gauge the finished threads and check the supplied nuts run correctly without binding or excessive play.

Material and bends: match batch identification to mechanical-test records; inspect bend surfaces and thread transitions for cracks, laps and damage.

Coating and packing: check coating coverage and agreed thickness, protect exposed threads, and keep different vehicle applications clearly separated.

What goes wrong

A bolt can match the catalogue photograph but have the wrong inside width or bend profile, leaving uneven contact around the axle. Short threads, unequal legs and mismatched nuts can prevent the assembly from seating correctly. Coating build-up can also make a previously acceptable thread bind.

A raw-material certificate does not show how the finished bend or heat treatment performed. Hold suspect batches for investigation and keep application and batch records together. Under the vehicle aftermarket code, a producer or distributor must inform the competent authority without delay about safety issues with its aftermarket parts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on suspension U-bolts from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% on the relevant headless-bolt lines, with no trade remedy, suspension or attached import control recorded. Confirm the exact code against material and tensile strength.

Which commodity code covers suspension U-bolts?

Check the headless-bolt branches: stainless steel, other steel below 800 MPa, or other steel at 800 MPa or more. Ask your broker to confirm using the drawing and finished-part material evidence.

What should I send the Chinese factory?

Send the axle and spring-plate application, dimensioned drawing, steel and coating specifications, thread details, matching nut requirements and agreed finished-part tests.

Is a steel certificate enough to accept the shipment?

Use it alongside finished-part test records, dimensional checks, thread gauging and bend inspection. Match all records to the delivered batch and trial-fit the intended assembly.
