6% duty on suspender belts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 6212 covers brassières, girdles, corsets, braces, suspenders, garters and similar articles and their parts, whether knitted or not. Standalone textile suspender belts belong within its other articles line, 6212 90 00 00. The table shows belt styles sharing that line. For bridal garters, see our bridal garter sourcing guide. For dancewear, see our dance belt sourcing guide.

The supplied tariff record shows 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. This is a flat rate rather than a varying duty range. Check the commodity code against the actual construction before shipment; see the bras and lingerie guide for the wider heading.

Specify waist fit, straps and stocking clips

Specify the waist measurement range, fastening positions, waistband width, fabric composition, lace pattern and lining. Agree measurements both relaxed and extended, with tolerances for each size. Approve a physical sample worn with the stockings your customers will use.

Define strap count, placement and adjustment range, clip material, gripping insert and metal finish. Check that adjustment stays in place during movement and that clips grip stocking tops without snagging them. Specify accurate composition information and care instructions as part of the purchase brief.

For metal hooks and sliders touching the skin, confirm with the relevant authority whether UK REACH nickel restrictions apply. Request nickel-release results for the actual components and finish used in production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,000 suspender belts under 6212 90 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,800. Duty at 6% is £408. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,208, so it is £1,441.60. Import taxes total £1,849.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £408 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Waist and straps: measure production pieces across the size range against the approved chart; check fastening alignment, strap symmetry and adjustment travel.

Clips and seams: attach clips to the intended stocking fabric, apply repeated tension and inspect for slipping, torn fabric, loose inserts and opening seams.

Elastic and colour: wash samples using the proposed care instructions, then check recovery, waistband curling, strap stretch and dark lace staining lighter fabric.

Metal and packing: inspect for sharp edges, corrosion and rough plating; match component test reports, size labels and packed quantities to the order. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A belt can match the waist chart yet ride down once the stockings pull on it. Narrow elastic can curl, sliders can creep and clip inserts can detach. Rough clips snag stocking tops, while weak strap seams open under tension. Test the complete belt with stockings rather than approving loose components alone.

Substituted elastic, clips or plating can change performance after sample approval. Keep the approved sample and component list, compare production pieces against them and investigate differences before accepting the shipment. UK sellers must not sell products they know, or should have known, are unsafe.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.
