Sourcing Sulphamic Acid from China
Sulphamic acid from China carries UK duty of 0% to 4%, depending on classification and suspension eligibility. The dedicated high-purity line pays 4%; the residual line has a conditional suspension. GB importers must address UK REACH and chemical classification, labelling and packaging duties. Cambridge China Bridge sources sulphamic acid.

Sulphamic acid duty and suspension
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 2811 covers other inorganic acids and other inorganic oxygen compounds of non-metals. Sulphamic acid, called sulphamidic acid in the tariff, has a dedicated line, 2811 19 80 50, for purity by weight of 95% or more, with or without an addition of no more than 5% silicon dioxide anti-caking agent. This line carries 4% duty on goods from China, with no suspension or listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Sulphamic acid falling under 2811 19 80 90 has a conditional 0% suspension against a normal 4% duty. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing the substance. Both relevant codes attach an import waste control and an export waste control. For notified waste shipped from China to England, the exporter applies through the dispatch authority; shipment requires consent from the Environment Agency and other competent authorities involved. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste requirements.
The table separates buying specifications within the relevant codes; it does not represent separate tariff lines. Confirm the composition and commodity code before claiming a suspension. A supplier's product name alone cannot establish eligibility. See the wider silica and inorganic acids guide for the rest of the heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sulphamic acid, purity at least 95%, without added anti-caking agent | 2811 19 80 50 | 4% | None |
| Other sulphamic acid falling outside the dedicated purity line | 2811 19 80 90 | 4% | None |
Specify purity, additives and dissolution
Specify sulphamic acid by identity, assay method, moisture, insoluble residue, sulphate, chloride and iron limits suited to your process. State whether assay is measured on the supplied material or a dry basis. Require disclosure of anti-caking additives, including their identity and content, and agree particle size, dissolution behaviour and packaging. Request a batch certificate of analysis and a retained sample.
For Great Britain, establish your UK REACH registration position before ordering. Registration generally applies at one tonne or more per substance annually, subject to applicable exemptions or supply-chain coverage. Importers must classify, label and package chemicals under the GB classification, labelling and packaging rules before placing them on the market. Hazardous chemicals supplied for workplace use require a safety data sheet.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: 4 tonnes of sulphamic acid; illustrative FOB and freight values under 2811 19 80 50, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £1,440 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,440. Duty at 4% is £217.60. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,657.60, so it is £1,131.52. Import taxes total £1,349.12; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £217.60 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and assay: match the batch certificate to the bags and independently check the agreed assay method and reporting basis.
Impurities and dissolution: test moisture, insoluble residue and the agreed impurity limits; compare dissolution with the approved sample.
Packing and quantity: inspect liners, closures, seams, damp patches and hard caking; check net weight and pallet stability.
Documents and labels: reconcile batch identifiers, additive declarations, safety data sheet and label information with the supplied grade.

What goes wrong
A quote for sulphamic acid can conceal a different assay basis or an undisclosed anti-caking addition. Material may meet the supplier's assay yet fail your limits for iron, chloride or insoluble residue. Damp or torn bags can leave a caked batch that is difficult to dose. Agree acceptance criteria and compare arrival samples with the approved batch.
A suspension claim can fail when the composition belongs in the dedicated high-purity line or the product is a preparation excluded by the footnote. Keep composition evidence with the classification decision, and investigate any mismatch between the certificate, safety data sheet and delivered material before releasing the batch.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on sulphamic acid from China?
The dedicated line 2811 19 80 50 carries 4%. Sulphamic acid correctly classified under 2811 19 80 90 can qualify for a conditional 0% suspension. Neither relevant line lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Does high-purity sulphamic acid qualify for zero duty?
The dedicated line for purity of 95% or more carries 4%, not a suspension. Do not use the residual line solely to claim zero duty; check composition against both the classification wording and suspension footnote.
What should a sulphamic acid certificate of analysis show?
Ask for the batch identifier, assay and its reporting basis, test methods, moisture, insoluble residue and agreed impurity results. Obtain a separate declaration identifying any anti-caking additive and its content.
Do I need UK REACH registration for sulphamic acid?
For Great Britain, registration generally applies at one tonne or more per substance annually. Confirm any exemption, valid transitional position or coverage by the manufacturer's UK only representative before importing.
