A medical stethoscope.

Stethoscope duty and tariff controls

Heading 9018 covers instruments and appliances used in medical, surgical, dental and veterinary sciences. This guide covers acoustic stethoscopes. The table shows product variants using the same candidate tariff line, 9018 90 84 00, rather than separate commodity lines. Confirm the classification for the actual design and intended use.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, the selected line carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The UK Trade Tariff attaches torture and repression import and export controls, fluorinated greenhouse gas import control, and mercury import and export controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm which requirements apply to the actual goods.

Provide the materials, intended use and operating method when confirming the commodity code. For other products within this heading, see medical instruments and devices.

Specify the chestpiece and acoustic assembly

Specify the patient group, chestpiece material and finish, diaphragm and bell configuration, tubing material and length, ear-tip fit and replacement parts. Agree whether the chestpiece rotates to select a sound path. Keep an approved sample and agree how the factory will compare sound transmission and handling noise against it.

For medical use, check the manufacturer's intended purpose, device classification, conformity documentation and accepted marking before ordering. Confirm with the MHRA whether the overseas manufacturer must appoint a UK Responsible Person. The device must be registered with MHRA before placement on the Great Britain market. Ask the MHRA to confirm how the importer should notify the manufacturer or UK Responsible Person of its intention to import and how importer details should be submitted.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative mixed order of adult and paediatric acoustic stethoscopes under 9018 90 84 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Sound path: compare sampled units with the approved sample using the agreed sound source; check each selectable chestpiece position for weak or interrupted transmission.

Assembly: check diaphragm seating, loose retaining rings, tubing kinks, secure joints, ear-tip retention and headset spring tension.

Finish and cleaning: inspect patient-contact surfaces for burrs and rough edges; check the supplied cleaning instructions against the agreed materials and care method.

Identity and packaging: match model identification, manufacturer details, marking and English instructions to the approved documents; check cartons for crushing and tubing deformation.

What goes wrong

A chestpiece can look correct while a poorly seated diaphragm, leaking joint or obstructed tube weakens sound transmission. Loose ear tips and stiff headset springs can also make an otherwise acceptable sample uncomfortable. Agree functional acceptance checks before production and repeat them on arrival.

Do not accept paperwork for a different model or manufacturer. Resolve mismatches before shipment, especially where branding or materials have changed. Keep the approved sample, specification and inspection record together; use quality inspection to plan the checks.
