Duty on sterile absorbable adhesion barriers

Heading 3006 includes sterile surgical or dental adhesion barriers, whether absorbable or not. The relevant line is 3006 10 30 00. This guide covers sterile absorbable surgical barriers only; the supplied tariff contains no separate lines for their different materials or formats.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the relevant line carries 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control is recorded for this line. That tariff position does not replace medical-device conformity checks.

Confirm the commodity code using the composition, intended surgical use and product presentation. For the wider heading, see the absorbable surgical haemostatic sponges guide.

Specify the barrier, absorption and intended use

Specify the material composition, supplied format, dimensions or fill quantity, application method and intended surgical sites. Ask for evidence supporting the claimed barrier performance and absorption profile, together with the manufacturer's instructions, contraindications and storage conditions. Agree remaining shelf life at arrival rather than accepting an unspecified expiry date.

For Great Britain, medical devices need conformity assessment and registration with the MHRA before placement on the market. For a manufacturer outside the UK, confirm the UK Responsible Person requirements with the MHRA. Check the applicable UKCA or CE route, declaration of conformity and product-specific certificate coverage before ordering. Request sterilisation and sterile-packaging validation through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative distributor order of individually packed sterile absorbable surgical adhesion barriers under 3006 10 30 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £64,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £64,000, so it is £12,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Product identity: match the barrier material, format, size and supplied applicator against the agreed specification and the product named in the conformity documents.

Sterile packaging: check unopened packs for punctures, lifted seals, moisture and crushing. Compare packaging with the validated pack specification; appearance alone cannot establish sterility.

Batch records: match batch identifiers and expiry dates on packs, cartons and release documents. Obtain the corresponding sterilisation records and check remaining shelf life against the order.

Instructions and storage: check English instructions, marking and label consistency. Review transport records against the manufacturer's storage conditions before releasing stock.

What goes wrong

A certificate may cover a different barrier, material or manufacturer from the goods offered. A supplier may provide a generic sterility report without linking it to the delivered batch. Check document scope and batch identity before payment and dispatch.

Damaged pouches, short remaining shelf life and undocumented material substitutions can make an otherwise matching shipment unacceptable. Keep affected stock separate while the manufacturer reviews the discrepancy. Agree how damaged packs, storage excursions and substitutions will be handled before production.
