Duty and classification for pegboard hooks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, the relevant lines under heading 7326, other articles of iron or steel, carry 2% duty for goods from China. Steel wire hooks are candidates for 7326 20 00 90; fabricated designs may need consideration under 7326 90 98 90. The table repeats the wire line for distinct hook designs rather than suggesting different duty rates.

Neither candidate line lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty, a steel measure or a suspension. The other steel article line attaches an import prohibition and an export restriction concerning torture and repression goods. Official guidance prohibits imports of the specified torture goods. Have your customs broker confirm how these attached controls apply to the declared hooks before shipping.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, materials, manufacturing method and intended use. Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether heading 7326 falls within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations apply; request steel-source and emissions information. See retail gondola shelving for the wider display system.

Specify the hook against the actual board

Supply a board sample or a drawing showing hole shape, spacing, board thickness and rear clearance. Specify wire diameter, usable hanging length, rear prong geometry, tip shape and coating. Distinguish a single arm, a loop and a separate label arm. Approve the complete assembly with the intended merchandise, including its hanging hole and packaging.

Agree a load and test method for the assembled hook and board, including loading near the tip and repeated fitting. Record acceptable deflection and retention in the purchase specification. For hooks intended or reasonably likely to be used by consumers in Great Britain, general product safety rules apply. Businesses importing or selling consumer products are responsible for their safety.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 5,000 steel wire pegboard display hooks under 7326 20 00 90, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,700. Duty at 2% is £114. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,814, so it is £1,162.80. Import taxes total £1,276.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £114 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Board fit: fit production samples to the approved board; check seating, rear clearance and resistance to accidental lift-out.

Strength: load hooks in the agreed position; check bending, weld cracking and whether the mounting prongs distort the board.

Ends and finish: check tips, cut ends and welds for burrs; inspect coating coverage, flaking and rust.

Packing: check bent arms, tangled hooks and damaged label holders on arrival; compare carton contents with the approved sample and inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A hook can look correct yet fail to seat because its rear bend was made for a different board thickness. Thin wire may sag with merchandise near the tip, while a weak weld can separate the arm from its mounting plate. Approve the board-and-hook combination rather than an isolated hook.

Coating can conceal rough welds, and loose packing can bend arms or rub through the finish. Keep the approved sample, photograph defects and separate affected stock for assessment. Check a replacement batch against the original drawing rather than accepting a verbal promise that it has been improved.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel pegboard hooks from China?

The relevant lines, 7326 20 00 90 and 7326 90 98 90, carry 2% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot. Neither lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm which code fits your design.

Will Chinese pegboard hooks fit my existing display?

Only a trial fit can confirm this. Send the factory your board sample or hole and thickness drawing, then approve the hook with the actual merchandise and label holder.

What load should I specify for a display hook?

Base it on the intended merchandise and its position along the arm. Agree a test on the actual board, including acceptable bending and retention, rather than relying on an unsupported supplier rating.

Do steel pegboard hooks fall within UK carbon border adjustment rules?

Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether heading 7326 falls within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations apply. Ask the supplier for steel-source and emissions information before ordering.
