Sourcing steel fishing trawl warps from China

Steel fishing trawl warps from China carry 0% UK customs duty, with an additional 60.4% anti-dumping duty on covered non-stainless steel ropes over 3 mm. Confirm the material, coating and actual hauling or lifting use before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel fishing trawl warps.

Customs duty and anti-dumping on trawl warps

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7312 covers stranded wire, ropes, cables and similar articles of iron or steel without electrical insulation. Steel fishing trawl warps are the ropes used to tow the fishing gear. Select the rope line by material, maximum cross-sectional dimension and coating. See the wider steel wire rope and cables guide.

The selected lines carry 0% customs duty for goods from China, plus 60.4% residual anti-dumping duty. The supplied tariff records show no suspension or steel trade measure on these lines. The published reference guide records the anti-dumping measure as maintained until 21 April 2028. Include this separate duty in your import duty and VAT calculation.

The tariff attaches waste import and export controls to 7312 10 98 19. For waste from China imported into England under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the Chinese competent authority for consent. Ask your customs broker to confirm the waste-control requirements for the actual shipment. Confirm the commodity code using the rope specification rather than the name 'trawl warp'.

Specify the warp for the vessel and winch

Give the factory the required diameter, rope construction, wire tensile grade, core, lay direction, finished length and minimum breaking force. Specify galvanising, lubricant and end preparation. Describe the winch drum, sheaves and towing arrangement so the supplier can check compatibility. Where warps are supplied as a pair, agree matching lengths and construction.

Ask for reel identification, material certificates and breaking-force test reports traceable to the supplied rope. Agree sampling and acceptance criteria before production. State whether the rope will tow gear or also lift loads. Maritime guidance says the principal function must be lifting a load for the lifting-equipment rules to apply; have the vessel operator confirm the appropriate requirements.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of 16 mm galvanised steel fishing trawl warps under 7312 10 83 19, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £24,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,000, so it is £4,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Construction: compare diameter, strand construction, core and lay with the approved specification and sample.

Strength evidence: match reel identifiers to certificates and check sampled breaking-force results against the agreed minimum.

Surface: check galvanising, lubricant coverage, rust, broken wires, kinks and crushed strands before accepting the reels.

Reels and ends: verify supplied lengths, paired-warp matching, end preparation and reel condition. Record findings in the inspection report.

What goes wrong

A rope with the quoted diameter can still have the wrong construction, core or wire grade. It may behave differently on the drum and sheaves or fail below the stated breaking force. Poor lubrication and damaged galvanising leave the rope vulnerable to corrosion. Reject unapproved substitutions and investigate certificates that cannot be traced to the delivered reels.

Buying by the fishing-use description alone can hide the anti-dumping cost. Coating and cross-sectional dimension affect classification, while a generic factory certificate does not establish the strength of the delivered batch. Resolve the code and test evidence before shipment, and photograph reel damage and rope defects on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel fishing trawl warps from China?

The selected steel rope lines carry 0% customs duty plus 60.4% residual anti-dumping duty. Confirm the exact material, coating and cross-sectional dimension before declaring the goods.

What should I put in a trawl warp specification?

Specify diameter, construction, core, wire grade, lay, length, minimum breaking force, galvanising, lubricant and ends. Include the vessel's winch and sheave details.

Are all trawl warps treated as lifting equipment?

Maritime guidance says the principal function must be lifting a load for the lifting-equipment rules to apply. Tell the vessel operator whether the warp is for towing or also lifting, and confirm the requirements.

How do I check a factory's breaking-force certificate?

Match its rope description and reel or batch identification to the goods. Agree a sample break test and compare the result with the specified minimum breaking force.
