Zero duty on empty steel boxes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 7310 covers iron or steel containers of up to 300 litres, excluding containers for compressed or liquefied gas and those fitted with mechanical or thermal equipment. This guide covers empty steel ammunition boxes. Capacity, wall thickness and closure distinguish the relevant lines. See the wider steel-container guide.

The supplied lines all carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to these lines. Confirm the requirement for the empty boxes with your customs broker. Official guidance requires labelling of imported products containing regulated fluorinated gas; it does not establish the declaration requirement for these empty boxes.

Give your broker the material, capacity, wall thickness, photographs and closure specification to confirm the commodity code. Reusable hinged boxes and tins closed by soldering or crimping fall under different descriptions. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Steel, seals and intended use

Specify steel grade, body and lid thickness, internal dimensions, usable capacity, coating, hinge construction, latch engagement and handle attachment. Define the intended loaded weight and agree how the factory will test the handle and closure. Approve a finished sample, including the gasket and packing method. Ask for test evidence before describing a box as waterproof.

For dangerous-goods transport, ask the relevant transport authority to confirm whether UN packaging approval is required for the intended use or an applicable exemption applies. Ask for the certificate covering the actual box design and intended contents. A gasket, military-style finish or printed marking alone is insufficient evidence. For consumer sales in Great Britain, the product must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use.

Ask your customs broker to confirm whether heading 7310 falls within the steel scope of UK CBAM for imports from 1 January 2027, using the published background guide as a starting point. Ask the factory for emissions data and review the UK CBAM guide before planning repeat imports.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 300 empty steel ammunition boxes; illustrative order, not a quotation under 7310 29 90 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £13,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,500, so it is £2,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Body and coating: measure wall thickness against the order, inspect welds and folded edges, and check inside corners for rust, exposed steel and coating damage.

Lid and gasket: check lid alignment, gasket continuity and compression around the rim. Repeat opening and closing, and carry out the agreed leakage test before accepting a waterproof claim.

Latch and handle: check positive latch engagement, hinge movement and handle attachment under the agreed loaded condition. Look for sharp edges, finger traps and distortion.

Packing and identity: check carton protection against dents and abrasion, and match product markings and any approval evidence to the ordered design. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A lid can close while leaving a gap at a corner. A poorly seated gasket, uneven rim or loose latch can undermine the seal. Thin steel dents around the closure, handles loosen at their attachments, and scratches expose steel to rust. Inspect assembled boxes rather than accepting photographs of separate components.

The other failure is ordering by appearance alone. An ammunition-style storage box may have no evidence supporting dangerous-goods transport use. Settle the intended contents, closure, test method and any required packaging approval before ordering; keep the approved sample for comparison with production.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel ammunition boxes from China?

The supplied heading 7310 lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The tariff data was read on 30 September 2026. Confirm the line using capacity, wall thickness and closure.

Does this guide cover boxes containing ammunition?

No. It covers empty steel boxes and packing tins. An order containing ammunition needs a separate assessment of the contents and shipment.

Can I use a steel ammunition box to transport dangerous goods?

Do not rely on its appearance. Ask the relevant transport authority to confirm whether dangerous-goods packaging needs UN approval for the intended use or an exemption applies. Obtain evidence covering the actual design and contents.

How do I check whether an ammunition box is waterproof?

Agree a leakage test for the intended use, then check the assembled box, gasket, rim and latch. A rubber gasket or a supplier's description alone does not demonstrate waterproof performance.
