Duty on stainless steel toilet cisterns

Heading 7324 covers sanitary ware and parts of iron or steel. Stainless steel toilet cisterns sit within the other sanitary ware and parts line, 7324 90 00 90. The table shows cistern variants using that same line. Separately supplied valves need their own classification check.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the supplied snapshot records 0% duty for goods from China on this line. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is separate; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code against the material, drawings and contents of the shipment. For the wider sanitary-ware heading and the matching pan, see stainless steel pedestal toilet pans.

Specify the cistern and flushing assembly

Specify stainless steel grade, sheet thickness, usable capacity, finish, mounting arrangement and lid access. Agree inlet position, outlet connection, flush-pipe route, valve model, operating pressure range and the intended toilet pan. State whether the order includes brackets, seals, flush controls and installation instructions.

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations set out requirements for water fittings in England and Wales. Ask the supplier for compliance evidence covering the proposed assembly, and have the installer review inlet backflow protection, overflow arrangements and flushing compatibility. Use testing and certification support to define the evidence needed.

Consumer products should only be sold once compliance with applicable product safety regulations has been demonstrated. Include sharp edges, lid security and mounting strength in the sample review.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 304 stainless steel toilet cisterns under 7324 90 00 90, invoiced at £7,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,600, so it is £1,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Steel and welds: verify the ordered grade and thickness, inspect welded corners and outlet seams, and check for pinholes, distortion and unfinished edges.

Filling and flushing: test the sample with the agreed inlet valve, flush mechanism and pan. Check shut-off, leakage, discharge, overflow operation and access for maintenance.

Connections and mounting: trial-fit the intended pipework, seals and brackets. Check hole positions, thread fit, lid clearance and access to replace the valve.

Finish and packing: compare the surface with the approved sample, inspect beneath protective film, and check protection around corners and projecting connections. Arrange quality inspection before shipment.

What goes wrong

A cistern can look correct yet leak at a welded outlet, continue filling after shut-off or flush poorly with the intended pan. A substituted valve can change the filling level or obstruct the lid. Concealed models can leave too little access to replace internal parts.

Approve a working assembly with the intended connections and pan, then record the valve model, seals and mounting drawing in the purchase specification. Inspect arriving stock for dents, scratched finishes, missing brackets and changed fittings before releasing it for installation.
