Sourcing stainless steel banding strip from China
Stainless steel banding strip from China under heading 7220 carries 0% UK duty across the listed lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Classification depends on width, thickness, nickel content and processing, rather than its use for banding. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel banding strip.

Zero duty on narrow stainless banding
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7220 covers flat-rolled stainless steel less than 600 mm wide. The table selects cold-rolled lines relevant to banding shipped directly from China. Thickness, nickel content and further processing determine the code. See the wider stainless steel strip guide.
The supplied tariff data shows 0% duty throughout, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or attached import control. Recheck before shipment. Prepare supply-chain documentation demonstrating compliance with Russian steel sanctions; a Chinese supplier's location alone does not establish the steel's supply-chain history.
Confirm the commodity code using the mill chemistry, dimensions, processing condition and consignment route. Separately, the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism takes effect on 1 January 2027; confirm with your customs broker whether heading 7220 falls within its scope and consult our UK CBAM guide. Ask the mill for emissions information when planning repeat orders.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold-rolled banding, over 0.35 mm but under 3 mm, nickel at least 2.5% | 7220 20 41 90 | 0% | None |
| Cold-rolled banding, over 0.35 mm but under 3 mm, nickel below 2.5% | 7220 20 49 90 | 0% | None |
| Cold-rolled banding, up to 0.35 mm thick, nickel at least 2.5% | 7220 20 81 90 | 0% | None |
| Cold-rolled banding, up to 0.35 mm thick, nickel below 2.5% | 7220 20 89 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the band, buckle and tensioning tool
Specify stainless grade, width, thickness and tolerances, tensile properties, elongation, hardness and edge condition. State the exposure environment and whether the band secures packaging, signs or equipment. Agree rounded or deburred edges, coil length, winding direction, core dimensions and dispenser arrangement.
Trial the strip with the actual buckle and tensioning tool. Check feeding, bending, cutting and joint slip under the agreed test conditions. Approve the assembled joint as well as the strip. Ask for heat-linked mill certificates showing chemistry and mechanical results, and retain an approved sample.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial shipment of cold-rolled stainless steel banding coils for a trade stockist under 7220 20 41 90, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,800, so it is £1,560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: match coil labels to heat-linked certificates and independently check chemistry against the ordered grade.
Dimensions and edges: measure width and thickness along sampled coils; inspect burrs, edge cracks and camber against the agreed tolerances.
Joint performance: check tensile results and repeat the buckle-and-tool trial, looking for strip fracture, buckle slip and inconsistent tightening.
Packing: check coil winding, dispenser operation, moisture protection and batch identification. Solid wood packaging used for imports into Great Britain must meet ISPM15 international standards.

What goes wrong
Banding can arrive with substituted material, thin sections or uneven hardness. Burrs damage hands and snag tools; poor winding prevents smooth dispensing. A strip can meet its material specification yet slip through an unsuitable buckle. Agree joint acceptance tests before production and repeat them on delivered stock.
Do not treat a corrosion complaint as proof of the wrong grade. Compare the certificate, independent chemistry results, surface condition and actual exposure. Keep affected coils identifiable and retain samples for investigation. Use quality inspection to define checks before dispatch and on arrival.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on stainless steel banding strip from China?
The supplied tariff data shows 0% duty for heading 7220, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate. Confirm the exact line before shipment.
Which commodity code applies to stainless banding?
For cold-rolled strip, check thickness and nickel content, then processing and consignment route. The banding application alone does not determine the code.
How do I check the stainless grade?
Match coil heat numbers to mill certificates and independently test chemistry. Do not accept appearance or a stainless label as confirmation of the ordered grade.
Can I use the banding with my existing buckles?
Trial the ordered width, thickness and material condition with your actual buckle and tool. Check tightening, cutting and joint slip before approving production.
