Sourcing PP spunbond fabric from China
Ordinary spunbond polypropylene nonwoven fabric from China pays 4% UK duty across all weight bands, with no anti-dumping duty in the supplied tariff record. Listed 0% suspensions are product-specific. Match compliance evidence to the intended use, not just the fabric name. Cambridge China Bridge sources spunbond polypropylene nonwoven fabric.

Ordinary spunbond rolls pay 4%
Heading 5603 covers nonwovens, whether or not impregnated, coated, covered or laminated. Polypropylene filament spunbond rolls fall within its man-made filament branches. Weight per square metre and whether the material is coated or covered distinguish the table lines. Finished bags, masks and other made-up products need their own classification.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 4% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no attached import controls on these lines. Listed 0% suspensions have narrow descriptions, including certain surgical or medical protective garments and named technical materials. They do not provide a general exemption for polypropylene spunbond rolls.
Give your broker the polymer composition, manufacturing process, actual weight, coating details and imported form to confirm the commodity code. For related nonwovens within the wider heading, see the meltblown fabric guide.

Specify the polypropylene web and finish
Specify polypropylene filament spunbond, resin composition and permitted recycled content, mass per square metre and tolerance, usable width, roll length, core dimensions, winding direction and permitted joins. Agree the bond pattern, colour, tensile strength and elongation in both machine and cross directions. Keep an approved sample for comparison.
Define the intended use before selecting finishes. For hydrophilic material, agree wetting and strike-through checks after ageing; for outdoor use, agree weathering evidence. Nonwovens for medical or protective products, food contact or construction need evidence relevant to that finished application. A raw-fabric report alone does not settle the finished product requirements.
For sales in Great Britain, textile labelling must show fibre content. Ask for a UK REACH statement covering finishes and additives, matched to the supplied material. REACH restrictions can limit, ban or impose conditions on substances. Agree suitable checks through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 8 tonnes of uncoated polypropylene spunbond rolls at 40 g/m² under 5603 12 90 90, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,200. Duty at 4% is £648. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,848, so it is £3,369.60. Import taxes total £4,017.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £648 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Weight and dimensions: cut and weigh samples across the full width, including the edges; compare mass per square metre, usable width and roll length with the order.
Bonding and strength: compare the bond pattern with the approved sample; test tensile strength and elongation in both directions, and look for weak edges or uneven bonding.
Surface and finish: inspect against light for holes, thin spots, specks and gels; check colour consistency and the agreed wetting or outdoor-performance evidence.
Rolls and records: check crushed cores, winding alignment, joins, wrapping and contamination; match roll batch identifiers to the test reports and composition information.

What goes wrong
A roll can meet average weight while thin strips across the width tear during converting. Recycled polymer can introduce specks and holes, finishes can lose performance after storage, and crushed cores can prevent mounting. Check samples from different positions and rolls rather than accepting a centre sample alone.
Another failure is buying ordinary spunbond against an unsupported barrier or filtration claim. Record the finished application and its acceptance checks before ordering. At arrival, hold suspect rolls for assessment and compare them with the approved sample, specification and batch report. See quality inspection explained.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on polypropylene spunbond from China?
Ordinary rolls on the selected lines pay 4% across all weight bands. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. Product-specific suspensions do not give ordinary polypropylene rolls a general exemption.
Does fabric weight change the import duty?
It changes the commodity code, but the selected lines all carry 4%. Confirm actual mass per square metre and coating or covering before choosing the code.
What should I put in a spunbond fabric specification?
State polymer and recycled content, weight and tolerance, width, roll length, core dimensions, bond pattern, colour, strength in both directions, finish and intended use.
Can a spunbond fabric report prove a finished mask is compliant?
A fabric report alone does not settle the finished mask requirements. Agree evidence and testing for the actual medical or protective product and its intended use.
