Duty on split bamboo weaving strips

Heading 1401 covers vegetable materials used primarily for plaiting. Simply split bamboo supplied as weaving material falls within the bamboo line, 1401 10 00 00. The strip specifications in the table share this commodity line, rather than representing separate tariff subdivisions. See the wider bamboo canes and rattan guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, the bamboo line carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of organic products. Its application to these weaving strips has not been established from the official guidance reviewed; the importer should confirm the requirement with their customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual material, processing and supplied form. Bamboo already woven into baskets or made into furniture is classified as the finished article. Check Great Britain plant health requirements for the exact material before shipping; do not assume that splitting or drying alone establishes an exemption.

Specify strips that suit your weave

State the bamboo species, strip width, thickness, usable length and permitted variation. Specify whether the outer skin stays on, whether nodes are acceptable, and the required colour and surface finish. Agree limits for taper, frayed edges, longitudinal splits and short pieces against a retained sample.

Try the sample in your intended weave, including its tightest bends. Record whether strips are used dry or conditioned before weaving, and agree a moisture acceptance method. Ask the factory to identify any insecticide, preservative or other treatment. For biocidally treated strips, confirm permitted substances, applicable labelling and any relevant transitional provisions with HSE before shipment.

If you sell the strips as consumer craft supplies, you are responsible for their safety. Assess splinters and sharp edges during handling and weaving. If organic claims are proposed, ask an approved UK organic control body which products can be imported under its rules.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a palletised consignment of bundled split bamboo weaving strips under 1401 10 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,000, so it is £2,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure width and thickness along sampled strips, check usable length, and compare taper and node positions with the agreed specification.

Weaving performance: bend and weave samples using the agreed preparation method; look for cracking, delamination, raised fibres and edges that snag.

Condition: check inside bundles for mould, insect holes, fresh bore dust and damp patches; measure moisture using the agreed method.

Packing and identity: check bundle contents, grade separation and batch references; match treatment records to the shipment and repeat condition checks on arrival.

What goes wrong

A bundle can look uniform while containing thick, thin and short strips. Thick sections resist tight bends, thin sections break, and rough edges catch adjacent strips. Approve a woven trial as well as loose samples, and inspect material from inside bundles rather than judging exposed pieces alone.

Damp packing encourages mould during transport, while insect damage may become visible after arrival. Compare arrival samples with the retained sample and record affected bundles before mixing stock. An attractive finish does not establish treatment compliance or resolve the organic-products control.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
