Duty and classification for wirehoods

Heading 8309 covers base-metal closures and packing accessories. For sparkling wine wirehoods, the relevant line to confirm is 8309 90 90 90, described as other packing accessories. The table shows wirehood variants using this residual code, rather than separate tariff lines. For the wider heading, see bottle caps and closures.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the supplied record shows 0% duty for goods from China under 8309 90 90 90. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line. The duty range across the wirehood variants shown is therefore 0%.

Send your customs broker photographs, material details and drawings showing whether the top plate is included, and confirm the commodity code before shipment. The illustrative order uses this residual line; the import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation method.

Specify the cage against the bottle and cork

Specify the bottle-neck drawing, retaining bead, fitted cork shape and exposed cork height. Agree wire material, diameter, cage height, leg geometry, lower loop and opening-loop position. Define the top plate's material, profile, edge finish and decoration. Supply the actual bottle and cork for sample approval, and trial the wirehood on your application equipment.

Agree retention and opening tests on the complete bottle assembly, using controlled conditions suitable for pressurised bottles. Consumer-product importers are responsible for safety and applicable labelling. Check sharp ends, wire breakage and whether the cage remains secure after application and handling.

Food-contact provisions cover materials expected to contact food or transfer constituents to it. Assess the wirehood's intended position and any possible transfer through the closure, rather than assuming its external position settles the question. Record wire coatings, plate lacquer and printing inks, and agree any necessary assessment with testing and certification support.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 100,000 sparkling wine wirehoods; illustrative order, with illustrative FOB and freight values under 8309 90 90 90, invoiced at £7,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,600, so it is £1,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: compare cage height, leg spacing, lower loop and plate profile with the approved drawing; apply samples to the intended bottle and cork.

Retention and opening: check the applied cage stays beneath the retaining bead, holds the cork securely and unwinds without unexpected wire fracture.

Wire and plate: check wire joints, burrs, exposed ends, rust, flaking coatings and plate edges; compare print, embossing and colour with the approved sample.

Packing: check cages are not crushed or tangled, plates remain seated and cartons identify the model and batch. Agree the sampling and assembly checks in your inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A cage can look correct yet be too tall for the fitted cork or have a lower loop that does not seat beneath the bottle bead. Loose fit can leave the cork inadequately restrained; excessive tightening can distort the cage or damage the cork. Wire that breaks during application or opening needs investigation before the batch is used.

Loose top plates, rough edges, rust and decoration rubbed away by nested cages can also cause rejection. Approve an applied assembly and packed samples, then compare production with those references. Keep suspect batches separate while the supplier investigates the cause.
