Sourcing solid-wood staff beads from China

Solid-wood staff beads from China carry 0% UK import duty across the relevant heading 4409 lines. Ask the Office for Product Safety and Standards to confirm timber-legality due-diligence obligations for the importer placing them on the Great Britain market; CITES paperwork depends on the species. Cambridge China Bridge sources solid-wood staff beads.

Zero duty on shaped solid-wood staff beads

Heading 4409 covers continuously shaped wood. This guide concerns solid-wood staff beads fitted inside a sash-window frame to retain the inner sash. Specify the timber species to distinguish coniferous, tropical and other non-coniferous wood. Oak and other non-tropical hardwood variants share the code shown in the table.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant lines carried 0% duty on goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. The tariff attaches CITES import and export controls. Check the species listing and ask your customs broker which permits or notifications apply to the shipment from China.

Confirm the commodity code using the species, profile drawing and product construction. For the wider heading, see the solid-wood glazing beads guide. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the staff-bead profile and sash clearance

Send a cross-section drawing and an approved sample showing the fixing face, visible curve, width, thickness and tolerances. Agree the clearance against the sash after painting. If a draught seal is included, specify its groove and fit. State whether lengths are continuous timber or end-jointed, the supplied lengths, acceptable knots and splits, moisture condition, and whether the finish is bare or primed.

Ask the Office for Product Safety and Standards to confirm the UK Timber Regulations' restrictions on placing illegally harvested timber on the Great Britain market and the operator's due-diligence obligations, including those applying to importers. Obtain species and harvest-origin information, assess legality risk and mitigate it. Ask your broker whether the species and origin make the wood plant-health regulated; regulated material requires a phytosanitary certificate.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 metres of coniferous solid-wood staff beads under 4409 10 18 00, invoiced at £3,500 free on board, with £1,530 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,030. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,030, so it is £1,006. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Profile and fit: compare sampled lengths with the drawing and approved sample, then trial-fit them in a representative sash frame. Check clearance with the intended finish and draught seal.

Timber and moisture: measure moisture across bundles against the agreed specification and drying records. Check bow, twist, splits, loose knots and damaged end joints.

Finish and fixing: inspect the fixing face for flatness, the visible edge for machining tears, and primer for coverage. Trial the intended fixing method on samples to check splitting.

Documents and packing: match species and batch details to the timber due diligence file. Check protective wrapping and bundle support. Ask the Forestry Commission or your customs broker to confirm applicable treatment and marking requirements for solid-wood transport pallets and crates. Arrange inspection against the agreed sample.

What goes wrong

A bead can match the visible curve yet have the wrong fixing-face thickness, leaving the sash tight or poorly retained. Primer build-up can reduce clearance, while a misplaced seal groove prevents the seal seating. Trial-fit finished samples before accepting the production profile.

Wet timber can shrink or bow after installation. Machining tears show through paint, and knots or weak end joints can split during fixing. Separate affected bundles on arrival and record defects against their batch details before installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on solid-wood staff beads from China?

The relevant heading 4409 lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty in the supplied tariff facts. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Are staff beads the same as glazing beads?

Staff beads retain the inner sash within a sash-window frame. Glazing beads retain glass. Send a cross-section drawing and fitting sample so the factory makes the intended profile.

Do solid-wood staff beads need timber due diligence?

Ask the Office for Product Safety and Standards to confirm the obligations of the operator first placing them on the Great Britain market, including gathering timber information, assessing the risk of illegal harvest and mitigating that risk.

What should I check before accepting staff beads?

Check profile, fixing-face thickness, straightness, moisture, knots, finish and any seal groove. Trial-fit a finished sample against the sash, rather than judging the visible curve alone.
