Duty and controls for snowplough trucks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8705 covers special purpose motor vehicles principally designed for purposes other than transporting people or goods. Dedicated snowplough trucks within this heading use the other special purpose vehicles line, 8705 90 80 00. The table shows configurations sharing that line. A goods lorry with a temporary plough needs its classification checked against its actual design.

The supplied line carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas and waste import controls. Imported fluorinated-gas equipment must be labelled. Ask your broker to confirm applicability, registration and quota conditions for cab air-conditioning. For waste shipments under notification controls, consent from the destination, dispatch and transit authorities is required before shipment; confirm the waste route before buying a scrap vehicle.

Specify the chassis and snowplough together

Specify the chassis, drive side, axle arrangement, tyre choice and intended working surface. Fix the blade width, shape, cutting-edge material, angle adjustment, obstacle-release mechanism, mounting frame and transport position. Agree hydraulic connections, control layout, corrosion protection, replaceable wear parts and access for servicing. Request axle-load information with the blade fitted and raised.

For road use in Great Britain, confirm vehicle approval unless exempt, and registration, before ordering. Agree the approval route for the completed vehicle, including emissions, lighting and construction evidence. Official guidance for temporary snowploughs says additional lamps should fulfil any obligatory lighting functions obscured by the plough. Check visibility with the blade fitted. Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A complete snowplough truck, illustrative order under 8705 90 80 00, invoiced at £185,000 free on board, with £9,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £194,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £194,500, so it is £38,900. Inspection checklist

Mounting: inspect frame welds, fasteners, locking pins and chassis interfaces against the agreed drawings; check clearance through steering and blade movement.

Hydraulics: witness lifting, lowering and angle adjustment; check hoses for rubbing, leaks, uncontrolled movement and secure transport retention.

Blade: check cutting-edge material, straightness, adjustment, obstacle-release action and access to replace wear parts.

What goes wrong

Watch for a mounting frame that does not match the chassis, excessive loading at the front axle, hoses that rub when the blade turns, and a raised blade that obscures lamps. Missing approval evidence, unclear English manuals and unavailable cutting edges can also delay use. Agree drawings, witnessed tests, documentation and spare-part identification before shipment.
