Replacement blades: 6% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 October 2026, replacement blades under 8211 94 00 00 carried 6% duty for goods from China. Heading 8211 covers knives with cutting blades and their blades, excluding knives of heading 8208. The table shows product variants sharing the same blade code, rather than separate tariff lines.

The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this blade line. It attaches an import CITES control without explanatory conditions. The importer should confirm the requirement for the actual goods from China with their customs broker before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the blade drawing, intended holder and packing details. Keep loose replacement blades separate from complete cutters in the classification brief. See the machine knives and blades guide for machine-mounted cutting products.

Specify holder fit and snap lines

Provide a drawing covering blade width, thickness, length, rear engagement features, segment spacing and score depth. Send the intended cutter body as a fit reference. Agree steel grade, hardness, edge grind, coating and rust protection, with an approved sample retained by both buyer and factory.

Specify how the blade should slide and engage in the holder, and how a segment should break using the intended snapping tool. Agree cutting trials on the buyer's actual board, film or other material. Confirm the applicable consumer product safety requirements with Trading Standards. Bladed articles must not be sold to under-18s.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20,000 snap-off replacement blades under 8211 94 00 00, invoiced at £4,500 free on board, with £450 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,950. Duty at 6% is £297. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,247, so it is £1,049.40. Import taxes total £1,346.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £297 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: check dimensions against the drawing, then insert sampled blades into the intended holder and check sliding, engagement and unwanted movement.

Edge and steel: check material records, hardness against the agreed specification, burrs and chipped tips; compare cutting performance with the approved sample.

Snap lines: use the agreed tool to check that segments separate at the score without breaking into adjacent segments or leaving a projecting fracture.

Packing: check that dispensers retain blades, caps stay closed and edges cannot pierce packs; inspect for rust, incorrect pack quantities and mixed blade profiles.

What goes wrong

A blade can match the advertised width yet fail because its thickness or rear engagement feature differs from the holder. Uneven scoring makes segments difficult to snap or causes premature breakage. Poor heat treatment can leave an edge that folds during cutting or chips at the tip.

Protective oil can leak into retail packs, while damp packing can leave rust between stacked blades. A dispenser that opens in transit turns loose blades into a handling problem. Record the defect against the agreed drawing or sample and use a quality inspection before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on snap-off replacement blades from China?

The supplied UK Trade Tariff record shows 6% under 8211 94 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for that line.

Can I sell snap-off replacement blades to under-18s?

Bladed articles must not be sold to under-18s. Treat replacement knife blades as age-restricted goods when planning sales.

Will blades of the same width fit every cutter?

Do not assume so. Check thickness, rear engagement features and segment spacing against the intended holder, then test fit using production samples.

How should I check whether the segments snap properly?

Use the intended snapping tool and compare with the approved sample. Check separation at the score, adjacent-segment damage and the shape of the remaining tip.
