Zero duty, with the ridge design checked

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6803 covers worked slate and articles of slate or agglomerated slate. Its roofing and wall slate line and its other slate article line both carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or attached import control.

The table shows the only commodity lines in the supplied record. Ask your customs broker to distinguish roofing slates used in a ridge detail from other shaped slate articles using the material description, drawing and photographs. Confirm the commodity code before shipment. See the wider slate guide for the rest of the heading.

Specify the ridge profile and roof fit

Specify natural or agglomerated slate, the cross-section, roof pitch, length, thickness, bearing faces and joint arrangement. Include drawings for the ridge run and its end pieces. Agree colour variation, edge finish, fixing-hole positions and the mating surfaces. Have the roofer check a sample assembly against the intended roof detail before approving production.

For roofing slate, the site's wider guide describes a declaration of performance and UKCA or CE marking, with declared water absorption, thermal cycling and sulphur dioxide classes. Ask which product specification covers the actual ridge piece; check that its documents identify that design. Where CE marking has been legitimately affixed, the product can continue to be supplied to the Great Britain market.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Crated slate ridge pieces for a roofing merchant, illustrative order assuming this classification under 6803 00 90 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,600, so it is £3,720. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Profile: compare sampled pieces with the approved drawing and sample assembly; check pitch, bearing faces, joint fit and end-piece orientation.

Stone: check thickness, colour variation, cracks, delamination and mineral inclusions; compare visible pyrite spots with the agreed acceptance criteria.

Documents: match the product description and batch references to the supplied performance documents, marking and order specification.

Packing and arrival: check separators, restrained movement and protection around projecting edges; photograph damaged crates and inspect pieces from different crates. Use a quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A ridge profile can look right in a photograph yet rock on its bearing faces or leave gaps when assembled. Misplaced fixing holes, mixed end pieces and chipped joint edges can stop installation. Check a sample assembly rather than approving colour alone.

Pyrite can oxidise and stain slate, while cracks and delamination undermine the pieces. Loose packing can damage corners during transport. A document describing ordinary flat roofing slate also leaves an unanswered question about a shaped ridge product: ask the supplier to explain exactly which design its evidence covers.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
