Sourcing silver-plated copper strip from China

Silver-plated copper strip from China within heading 7409 carries a uniform 0% UK duty rate. This heading covers strip exceeding 0.15 mm thick; confirm the code against the substrate and supply form. Specify silver thickness and adhesion separately from copper gauge. Cambridge China Bridge sources silver-plated copper strip.

UK duty on silver-plated copper strip

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7409 covers copper plates, sheets and strip exceeding 0.15 mm thick. The table gives substrate and supply-form alternatives for silver-plated strip, subject to classification confirmation. For the wider heading, see our copper alloy leadframe strip guide.

Every supplied line carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no attached import controls recorded. The refined-copper lines list 0% autonomous suspensions for specified electrolytically manufactured foil and strip, and a specified ceramic-and-copper product partly coated with silver. These are narrowly described products, not a general silver-plating concession, and offer no rate reduction against the ordinary 0% duty.

Send your customs broker the substrate composition, thickness, plating construction and coil or cut-length format to confirm the commodity code. Copper foil of 0.15 mm or less belongs under heading 7410, as explained in the site's copper sheet guide. Allow for 20% import VAT and use the import duty and VAT guide when budgeting.

Specify the copper substrate and silver deposit

State copper or copper-alloy grade, temper, substrate thickness, finished thickness, width, camber, edge condition and coil dimensions. Define whether silver covers both faces, selected bands or the edges. Specify minimum local silver thickness, measurement positions, any underlayer, and whether plating takes place before or after slitting.

Agree adhesion and bend-test methods, acceptable surface defects, and solderability or contact-resistance tests suited to the intended component. Ask for material certificates and plating records linked to the delivered batch. Use an approved sample to agree the finish; appearance alone cannot establish silver thickness.

UK REACH generally applies to substances on their own, in mixtures or in articles. Obtain a supplier declaration covering restricted substances in the substrate, underlayer and silver coating. REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on manufacture, placing on the market or use; check the actual composition and intended application.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Trial batch of silver-plated refined copper strip coils, illustrative under 7409 11 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,300. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,300, so it is £660. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match coil labels and batch records to the material certificate; verify composition and temper where the application warrants testing.

Dimensions: measure substrate and finished gauge as agreed, strip width, camber and slit-edge burr; check coil weight and winding condition.

Plating: measure silver thickness at agreed positions and across plated bands; check bare patches, scratches, peeling and adhesion after the agreed bend test.

Packing: check dry protective wrapping, interleaving, edge protection and batch identification; inspect for tarnish and rubbing damage before releasing stock. Use our quality inspection guide to brief the inspection.

What goes wrong

A bright sample can hide a thin or uneven silver deposit. Orders also fail when the supplier changes the substrate temper, leaves exposed slit edges where coverage was expected, or supplies plating that lifts during forming. Keep substrate gauge and silver thickness as separate acceptance checks.

Coils can arrive tarnished, scratched or damaged at the edges when wrapping and interleaving are inadequate. Agree packing and rejection criteria before ordering, and test a production sample in the intended forming or joining process before accepting the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on silver-plated copper strip from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% duty on every heading 7409 line for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. Confirm that your strip belongs in this heading.

Which commodity code should I use for silver-plated copper strip?

For refined-copper strip, the supplied alternatives are 7409 11 00 00 in coils and 7409 19 00 00 otherwise. Give your broker the composition, gauge and plating construction before confirming the code.

How do I check the silver coating before shipment?

Agree a thickness-measurement method and locations, including edges and plated bands. Check adhesion after bending and any application-specific solderability or contact-resistance tests.

What should the supplier put on the specification?

Include substrate grade and temper, substrate and finished gauge, silver thickness and coverage, underlayer, slit-edge condition, coil dimensions, test methods and protective packing.
