Sourcing sillimanite aggregate from China

Sillimanite refractory aggregate from China carries 0% UK duty, whether or not calcined. The tariff attaches a waste import control, so confirm whether reclaimed material needs waste procedures before shipment. Specify mineral identity and grading. Duty and waste controls for sillimanite

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 November 2026, sillimanite, whether or not calcined, falls within heading 2508 under 2508 50 00 00 alongside andalusite and kyanite. Duty on goods from China is 0%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded. The table shows buying specifications within this shared commodity line, rather than separate tariff codes.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. For waste from China imported under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the competent authority in the dispatch country for consent. Confirm the applicable procedure with your customs broker before shipping reclaimed or discarded material; do not assume that calling it aggregate settles its waste status.

Confirm the commodity code against the mineral identity, processing and any added ingredients. The kyanite refractory aggregate guide gives related heading context. These entries cover mineral feedstock; finished refractory bricks are covered in the site's separate guides.

Specify sillimanite identity and firing behaviour

Name sillimanite explicitly rather than accepting an unspecified aluminosilicate aggregate. Agree whether the material is uncalcined or calcined, its source, mineral composition, alumina and silica analysis, iron-bearing impurities, moisture, particle-size distribution and maximum fines. Ask for batch-linked reports and a retained reference sample.

Trial the proposed grade in your refractory formulation. Agree the firing schedule and the checks for dimensional change, fired strength and compatibility with the binder. A chemistry report alone does not establish suitability for your process. For sale or use in Great Britain, your business must identify and manage substance risks under UK REACH; review your obligations for the actual grade.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 25 tonnes of sillimanite refractory aggregate in bulk bags under 2508 50 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,000, so it is £1,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match bag markings, batch records and mineral analysis to the approved sillimanite sample; investigate substituted or blended minerals.

Grading: sieve representative samples against the agreed distribution, checking oversize particles and fines after transport.

Condition: check moisture, caking, foreign material and damaged bag seams or lifting loops before accepting the delivery.

Handling: review labels and safety data sheets for harmful substances, including crystalline silica impurities, and assess dust-generating unloading and mixing.

What goes wrong

A supplier may offer the right bulk chemistry but a different mineral blend or processing condition. That can change firing behaviour in your formulation. Excess fines alter mixing and binder demand, while damp or torn bags create caking, material loss and contamination. Compare the delivered batch with the approved sample before releasing it to production.

Reclaimed refractory material introduces a separate waste-status question. Obtain its origin and processing history before agreeing shipment, then have your customs broker confirm the tariff's waste control requirements. Keep this decision separate from whether the material passes your technical tests.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sillimanite from China?

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 November 2026, sillimanite under 2508 50 00 00 carries 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded.

Does calcined sillimanite use a different commodity code?

Heading 2508 covers sillimanite whether or not calcined. Confirm the actual mineral identity and any additives before using 2508 50 00 00.

What should I test before buying sillimanite aggregate?

Check mineral identity, chemistry, grading, fines and moisture, then trial the grade in your refractory formulation against the agreed firing and performance checks.

Can reclaimed sillimanite be shipped as ordinary aggregate?

Do not assume so. The tariff attaches a waste import control. Ask your customs broker to confirm waste status and the procedure before shipment.
