Shimeji spawn: 0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0602 covers other live plants, cuttings and slips, and mushroom spawn. The mushroom-spawn line, 0602 90 10 00, carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded. The table shows product forms within the same tariff line, rather than separate commodity codes.

The supplied tariff record attaches Veterinary control and Import control of organic products. The importer should confirm the requirements for the actual Shimeji spawn and its medium with their customs broker. For organic claims, also consult an approved UK organic control body about which products can be imported. Do this before agreeing labels or dispatch.

Confirm the species, carrier ingredients and intended cultivation use when checking the commodity code. For wider mushroom-spawn coverage, see the enoki spawn guide. Keep the duty calculation separate from clearance and transport costs.

Specify the Shimeji strain and spawn carrier

Write down the scientific species name, supplier strain reference and intended white or brown fruiting type. Specify grain or sawdust spawn, carrier ingredients, additives, pack weight, inoculation record and batch identification. Ask for evidence of fruiting from that strain in a cultivation process comparable to yours.

Agree storage conditions, transport handling, filter construction and a batch acceptance test using your intended substrate. Ask the supplier to declare any soil or animal-derived ingredients. Soil from China requires authorisation to import, move or keep; ask APHA to assess the proposed medium before ordering if its status is unclear.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business shipment of sealed Shimeji grain-spawn bags under 0602 90 10 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,900, so it is £1,380. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the strain reference, fruiting type and batch labels to the purchase specification.

Condition: check for coloured contamination, pooled liquid, unusual odour when sampling, and uneven colonisation.

Packing: inspect seals, filter patches, punctures and crushed bags; compare transport records with the agreed handling conditions.

Viability: inoculate the intended substrate under controlled conditions and record recovery, contamination and fruiting. Agree the sampling procedure through the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A bag can look colonised while giving poor recovery after transport. Strain substitutions, unsuitable carrier formulations, damaged filters and warm storage can undermine a cultivation trial. Keep suspect batches separate and compare them with retained supplier samples before releasing stock.

Clearance planning also fails when the invoice says only “mushroom spawn” and nobody has reviewed the medium or organic claims. Give the broker the full ingredient declaration and intended use before dispatch. Record customer batch allocations so complaints can be traced to the supplied strain and shipment.
