Duty on plain shelled chestnuts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 October 2026, heading 0802 covers other nuts, fresh or dried, whether or not shelled or peeled. Shelled chestnuts use 0802 42 00 00 and carry 4% duty from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is shown for this line. The table includes neighbouring products for comparison; they are not shelled chestnut codes.

The tariff attaches an organic import control. Organic chestnuts from China entering Great Britain need a certificate of inspection for each consignment, and the exporter's control body and country must be on the non-UK organic registers. Imported nuts must meet the same food hygiene standards and procedures as food produced in Great Britain.

Confirm the exact product with the commodity code guide, including whether it is fresh, dried or prepared. Roasted, salted, coated or mixed nuts fall under heading 2008 rather than this plain-nut heading. See the wider nuts guide for related products. Plain nuts are zero-rated for VAT; the duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.

Specify peeling, kernel condition and storage

State whether the chestnuts are fresh or dried, whole kernels or pieces, and whether the inner skin must also be removed. Agree kernel size, colour, permitted broken pieces, residual skin and moisture against an approved sample. Describe the intended use, such as stuffing, bakery fillings or further processing.

Agree packaging, storage conditions and the evidence supporting shelf life. Ask for batch-linked aflatoxin results before shipment. For direct consumption, confirm the applicable limits for aflatoxin B1 and total aflatoxins with the relevant food safety authority. Keep the sample identity tied to the production lot.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10 tonnes of plain dried shelled chestnuts; illustrative order only under 0802 42 00 00, invoiced at £55,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £57,500. Duty at 4% is £2,300. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £59,800, so it is £11,960. Import taxes total £14,260; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,300 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Peeling: check residual shell and inner skin, cut marks and damaged kernels against the approved sample.

Grade: compare size, colour, whole kernels and broken pieces across sampled packs.

Condition: check mould, insect damage, unusual odour, moisture and condensation inside packs.

Batch evidence: match pack identification to inspection records and laboratory results; inspect seals and arrival condition.

What goes wrong

A sample of intact, cleanly peeled kernels can be followed by bulk packs containing fragments, skin or mixed sizes. Record acceptance criteria before production and inspect samples drawn from the shipment rather than relying on the supplier's display sample.

Poor drying, damp storage or damaged seals can leave chestnuts mouldy or unsuitable for the agreed use. Hold suspect stock for assessment. If a lot exceeds an applicable aflatoxin limit, confirm the permitted handling with the relevant food safety authority before considering blending. Check organic paperwork before dispatch rather than treating an organic claim on the pack as sufficient.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
