Duty on sewing machine needles

Heading 8452 includes sewing machines, their dedicated furniture and parts, and sewing machine needles. This guide covers the needle line, 8452 30 00 00. The table shows different needle applications under that same commodity line. See the wider sewing machines guide for complete machines.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, sewing machine needles from China carried 0% duty. The supplied facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for this line. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the commodity code using the product description and intended application. Describe these as sewing machine needles rather than simply needles. The import duty and VAT guide explains the tax calculation.

Specify the needle system and sewing application

Give the factory the machine make and model, needle system, size designation, shank shape, point type and intended fabric. Specify the eye, groove and scarf geometry against an approved sample or drawing. Agree the steel, surface finish, pack contents and compatibility wording. Do not accept a supplier's claim that a needle fits every machine.

For needles intended for or likely to be used by consumers in Great Britain, general product safety rules apply. Importers must ensure that the product is safe before placing it on that market. Provide information about risks that are not immediately obvious and the precautions needed.

Where reasonable, consumer-product traceability requires the producer's name and address and a product reference or batch identification on the product or packaging. Agree the pack artwork before production and retain samples linked to the factory batch.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,500 packs of sewing machine needles under 8452 30 00 00, invoiced at £1,200 free on board, with £184 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,384. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,384, so it is £276.80. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit and dimensions: compare shank shape, overall length, eye position and scarf orientation with the approved drawing. Fit samples to the intended machine and check clearance through the sewing cycle.

Point and eye finish: inspect for bent shafts, damaged points, burrs, rust and uneven surface finish. Check that thread passes through the eye without snagging.

Sewing performance: sew the intended fabrics using the agreed thread and machine settings. Check for skipped stitches, thread breaks, fabric damage and needle breakage.

Packing and identity: check system and size markings, pack contents, batch identification and protection against moisture and loose sharp points. Repeat visual and fit checks on arrival. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A similar-looking needle can have the wrong shank, length or scarf position. That can produce poor stitch formation or contact with machine parts. Rough eyes damage thread, unsuitable points damage fabric, and mixed systems within a pack create problems that a carton-level check can miss.

Approve samples on the actual machine and fabric before bulk production. Keep different systems separately identified and compare arrival samples with the approved batch. Record defects by batch so the factory can investigate the affected production.
