Sourcing semiconductor furnaces from China

Semiconductor diffusion furnaces and qualifying parts under heading 8486 carry 0% UK duty from China. Complete production machines need machinery conformity assessment, a declaration and UKCA or CE marking for Great Britain. Specify loaded temperature uniformity and gas safety tests. Cambridge China Bridge sources semiconductor diffusion furnaces.

Zero duty on qualifying diffusion furnaces

Heading 8486 covers specialised semiconductor manufacturing machinery and its parts. A diffusion furnace used principally to manufacture semiconductor devices or integrated circuits falls within the description of 8486 20 00 00. The table also identifies parts and associated machinery supplied separately; those associated equipment codes are not alternative codes for the same furnace. See the wider semiconductor equipment guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty on goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. This tariff position does not replace machinery safety requirements.

Confirm the commodity code using the furnace's intended manufacturing process, technical description and shipment contents. Check separately supplied spares individually rather than assuming every tube, heater or valve qualifies as a machinery part. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the loaded diffusion process

Specify horizontal or vertical loading, wafer diameter, boat capacity, usable heated length, temperature uniformity with a loaded boat, ramp and cooling behaviour, and the intended dopant chemistry. Identify tube and boat materials, gas purity, flow control, exhaust connections and contamination criteria. Agree a factory acceptance trial using your wafers, with sheet resistance measurements across wafers and along the boat.

For complete production machinery in Great Britain, confirm applicable conformity assessment, declaration and UKCA or CE marking requirements with the relevant authority. The responsible person must ensure the technical file is compiled and available on request. Ask for conformity documents matching the supplied configuration and safety evidence covering hot surfaces, electrical equipment, gas delivery and chemical hazards. Agree installation responsibilities, operating instructions, recipe access and critical spares before shipment.

Subsequent workplace use and maintenance are covered by the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations. Match the furnace's power, cooling, exhaust and gas interfaces to your site before ordering, and agree a site acceptance trial after installation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 3 semiconductor diffusion furnaces for a pilot production business, illustrative only under 8486 20 00 00, invoiced at £450,000 free on board, with £15,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £465,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £465,000, so it is £93,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Process performance: check temperature mapping with the agreed boat load, recipe repeatability and sheet resistance results against the purchase specification.

Gas and protection: have competent personnel demonstrate purge sequences, leak checks, gas shut-off, overtemperature protection and the response to exhaust or power failure.

Arrival condition: inspect quartz tubes and boats for cracks, chips and contamination; check heater supports, seals, wiring and shipping indicators before installation.

Documents and interfaces: match the machine identity to the declaration and supplied instructions; check utility drawings, controller backups and spare parts. Agree the scope through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

An empty-tube temperature report can hide poor uniformity with a loaded boat. Gas distribution or contamination can produce uneven sheet resistance even when the controller shows the requested temperature. Require recorded trials on representative wafers and agree the acceptance criteria before paying the balance.

Quartz can crack during transport, refurbished heaters can drift, and an exhaust mismatch can prevent commissioning. Supplier-controlled recipes or missing controller backups can also stop production after a fault. Record component condition, package fragile internals securely and agree access to software, recipes and replacement parts.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on diffusion furnaces from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for qualifying semiconductor diffusion furnaces under 8486 20 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Do semiconductor diffusion furnaces need UKCA marking?

For complete production machinery for Great Britain, confirm applicable UKCA or CE marking, conformity assessment and declaration requirements with the relevant authority. Match the paperwork to the furnace configuration being supplied.

What should a diffusion furnace acceptance test measure?

Check loaded temperature uniformity, recipe repeatability, gas control and sheet resistance across wafers and along the boat, using agreed acceptance criteria.

What should I check on a refurbished diffusion furnace?

Check tube and boat condition, heater history, seals, controller backups and disclosed component replacements. Repeat the loaded process trial and agree spares and installation support.
