Sourcing Schottky diodes from China

Schottky diodes from China carry 0% UK duty under 8541 10 00 00, with no listed trade remedies. Business-to-business components are outside the hazardous-substance rules themselves, but an in-scope final assembly must comply, including its diodes. Cambridge China Bridge sources Schottky diodes.

UK duty on Schottky diodes

Heading 8541 covers semiconductor devices and related goods. This guide concerns discrete Schottky diodes, within the line for diodes other than photosensitive or light-emitting diodes. The table shows package and material variants sharing the same commodity code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, 8541 10 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for this line. Import VAT at 20% still applies.

Confirm the commodity code using the datasheet and the goods as shipped, especially if the diode is supplied within an assembled circuit. For the wider diode family, see rectifier diodes.

Specify the diode and its operating conditions

Specify silicon or silicon carbide, the exact manufacturer and part, package drawing, pin connections and cathode identification. Agree reverse-voltage rating, forward current, surge capability, forward-voltage drop and reverse leakage at stated test temperatures. Define the mounting and cooling conditions used to assess current capability.

For Great Britain, official guidance excludes component parts sold business to business from the hazardous-substance rules, but requires an in-scope final assembly to comply, including its components. Ask for material declarations and supporting evidence matched to the diode and lead finish. Agree tape orientation, packaging, soldering conditions and batch traceability before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 packaged Schottky diodes under 8541 10 00 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,100, so it is £420. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match reel labels, package markings, manufacturer details and batch records to the approved part and purchase order.

Electrical performance: sample forward-voltage drop and reverse leakage at the agreed current, voltage and temperature; check results against the approved datasheet.

Package and polarity: check dimensions, pin connections, cathode marking, lead finish and tape orientation against the drawing.

Arrival condition: inspect for bent leads, cracked bodies, damaged reels and compromised moisture-protective packaging where specified. Keep batches separate during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A replacement with the same package can have different leakage, forward-voltage drop or thermal behaviour. Room-temperature samples can miss leakage problems in a hot circuit. Compare candidates in the intended circuit and agree written approval before any manufacturer, material or package substitution.

Mixed batches, unclear markings and test reports for a different part make defects harder to trace. Require shipment records tied to the actual production batch, and investigate discrepancies before releasing stock for assembly.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on Schottky diodes from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty under 8541 10 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT at 20% still applies.

Are business-to-business Schottky diodes covered by hazardous-substance rules?

Official Great Britain guidance excludes component parts sold business to business, but an in-scope final assembly must comply, including its components. Obtain supporting material evidence.

Can I accept an equivalent Schottky diode?

Compare pin connections, reverse-voltage rating, forward-voltage drop, leakage and thermal behaviour under your circuit conditions. Approve the exact replacement in writing.

What should I test when Schottky diodes arrive?

Check identity, polarity, package dimensions and batch records. Sample forward-voltage drop and reverse leakage under the agreed test conditions, and inspect packaging damage.
