Sourcing rotary potentiometers from China

Rotary potentiometers from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant wirewound and other variable-resistor lines. Business-to-business component parts are outside RoHS scope; confirm with the relevant product-compliance authority how those rules apply to the finished assembly. Specify the taper, shaft and contact performance. Cambridge China Bridge sources rotary potentiometers.

0% duty on rotary potentiometers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, rotary potentiometers within heading 8533 carried 0% UK duty for goods from China. The heading covers electrical resistors, including rheostats and potentiometers, but excludes heating resistors. The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls on the selected lines.

Choose the line by resistive technology and power handling capacity. Wirewound types and other variable resistors have separate lines, each divided at 20 W. Confirm the construction and rating from the manufacturer's datasheet before checking your commodity code. For related adjustable components within this heading, see trimmer potentiometers.

Specify the resistance curve and shaft

Specify total resistance, tolerance, linear or logarithmic taper, track material, rated power and working voltage. State the electrical travel, mechanical rotation, operating torque and rotation life. For linked tracks, agree how closely their outputs must follow each other. Approve a sample in the intended circuit rather than relying on the resistance marking alone.

Provide a drawing for shaft length, diameter, flat or spline, mounting bush, locating tab and terminal layout. Confirm whether the part mounts on a panel or circuit board, whether it includes a switch, and the soldering process it must withstand. Agree protective packing that prevents bent terminals and damaged shafts.

Official guidance says component parts sold business to business are outside RoHS scope. Confirm with the relevant product-compliance authority how RoHS applies when these components are incorporated into finished electrical products. Request material declarations and supporting data for the exact part number, including its track, terminals and solder.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10,000 rotary potentiometers for equipment assembly under 8533 40 10 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,300. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,300, so it is £1,860. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Resistance and taper: measure total resistance and the wiper output through the agreed travel against the approved curve.

Contact performance: rotate samples while monitoring the signal for jumps, intermittent contact and noise; check linked tracks together where fitted.

Mechanical fit: check shafts, bushes, terminals, end stops and operating torque against the drawing and approved sample.

Traceability and packing: match part numbers and batch labels to the order and material documents; inspect for bent terminals, corrosion and shaft damage. Use the quality inspection guide to set out the checks.

What goes wrong

A part can have the ordered total resistance yet the wrong taper, making a control respond unevenly. Wiper noise, loose shafts, inconsistent torque and weak end stops can also make an apparently matching part unsuitable. Test samples in the intended circuit and enclosure before approving bulk production.

Substitution can change the track material, terminal layout or shaft profile while leaving the catalogue description unchanged. Buy against an agreed drawing and full part number, retain the approved sample, and require the supplier to disclose proposed changes before production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rotary potentiometers from China?

The supplied tariff records, read on 30 September 2026, show 0% duty on all selected rotary potentiometer lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code covers rotary potentiometers?

Classification depends on wirewound or other construction and power handling capacity. The selected lines divide at 20 W. Confirm the manufacturer's datasheet before choosing a code.

Do rotary potentiometer components need hazardous-substance compliance documents?

Business-to-business component parts are outside RoHS scope. Confirm with the relevant product-compliance authority how RoHS applies to your finished product. Ask for part-specific material declarations and supporting data for your assembly.

How do I check a rotary potentiometer sample?

Measure total resistance and the taper through its travel, monitor wiper noise and interruptions, and check shaft fit, torque and end stops. Test it in the intended circuit and enclosure.
