Sourcing reptile feed pellets from China

Selected reptile feed pellet lines from China carry £19 to £85 per 1,000 kg; qualifying pea-protein pellets carry 8%. Classification follows the recipe. For pellets containing animal products, confirm country and establishment eligibility, health certification and border-check requirements with APHA or your customs broker before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources reptile feed pellets.

Duty follows the pellet recipe

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 2309 covers preparations used in animal feeding. The selected low-milk pellet lines carry £19, £46 or £85 per 1,000 kg according to starch content. The listed high-protein pea-protein line carries 8%, but is a narrowly defined ingredient line, not a general code for complete reptile diets. Milk-rich recipes can fall outside these selected rows.

The selected lines list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The soya-protein and astaxanthin suspensions exclude mixtures containing those products, so do not apply to ordinary mixed reptile pellets. The tariff attaches veterinary, organic and waste import controls, plus seal-product controls on the selected starch lines. Waste export controls are also listed. Confirm the applicable documents and any waste notification requirements with your customs broker.

Give the broker the full ingredient list, starch and milk-product analysis, processing method and intended reptile use when checking the commodity code. The pea-protein row requires more than 65 percent protein on a dry weight basis and the other conditions in its tariff path. For the wider feed heading, see ornamental fish feed.

Specify the reptile diet and pellet behaviour

Name the target reptile species and life stage, and state whether the pellets are a complete diet, a complementary feed or an ingredient for blending. Agree the recipe, protein sources, crude protein, fat, fibre, ash, moisture, calcium and phosphorus. Identify fish, meat, insect and dairy ingredients separately. Specify pellet diameter, length, hardness and dust acceptance against an approved sample.

For aquatic turtle pellets, agree floating or sinking behaviour and resistance to breaking down in water. For terrestrial reptiles, agree dry feeding or soaking instructions and the resulting texture. Fix the packaging barrier, resealing method, storage conditions and shelf-life evidence. Use testing and certification support to define batch sampling and analysis.

For pellets containing animal products, ask APHA or your customs broker to confirm whether China and the producing establishment are eligible for the actual product before ordering, and which health certification, import pre-notification and border checks are required. Fish-derived processed pet food has a specific country-list route. Confirm pet food labelling requirements for food type, composition, analytical constituents and additives, and the authorisation status of feed additives in Great Britain, with the relevant authority before approving the recipe and labels.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small wholesale lot of qualifying pea-protein pellets for reptile feed blending, rather than a complete mixed diet under 2309 90 96 95, invoiced at £3,500 free on board, with £2,680 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,180. Duty at 8% is £494.40. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,674.40, so it is £1,334.88. Import taxes total £1,829.28; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £494.40 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Recipe and analysis: match the batch recipe to the approved formula; independently test declared nutrients, moisture and the starch content used for classification. Agree contaminant and microbiological testing with the laboratory.

Pellet performance: compare size, hardness, breakage and dust with the retained sample; test floating, sinking or soaking behaviour under the agreed feeding conditions.

Arrival condition: check for mould, insects, caking, rancid odour and damp packaging; photograph affected packs and retain separate samples.

Packs and records: check seals, net contents, batch references, feeding instructions and date marking against the approved artwork and batch reports. Match animal-product shipment documents to the actual lot.

What goes wrong

A supplier can change the cereal binder or protein source after sample approval. This can change nutrition, starch classification and the animal-product import route. Pellets may arrive dusty, lose buoyancy or turn to sludge when soaked. Compare production and arrival samples using the quality inspection guide, and require written approval for recipe changes.

Organic importers must be based and certified in the UK; ask the broker to confirm inspection certificates before printing organic claims. Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste, so confirm the status of recovered ingredients. If seal-derived ingredients are proposed, commercial imports require the indigenous-community exemption; ask the broker to confirm any seal catch certificate requirement and resolve eligibility before ordering.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on reptile feed pellets from China?

The selected low-milk starch lines carry £19, £46 or £85 per 1,000 kg. Qualifying high-protein pea-protein pellets carry 8%. These rates do not cover every possible reptile-feed recipe.

Can I import turtle pellets containing fish from China?

Check the country approval route for fish-derived processed pet food, and ask APHA or your customs broker to confirm any producing-establishment listing requirement. For animal-product pellets, confirm the applicable health certification, pre-notification and border checks before ordering.

Can I use the pea-protein code for a complete reptile diet?

Only if the goods meet that line's full definition. It is not a general complete-feed code. Give the broker the recipe and analysis before using it.

What should I test before buying reptile feed pellets?

Check nutrients against the formula, moisture, contaminants, pellet size, hardness and dust. For aquatic turtle feed, test buoyancy and water breakdown; for soaked feed, check the resulting texture.
