Duty and classification for replacement heads

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 October 2026, heading 8424 covers mechanical spraying appliances and their parts. The other-parts line, 8424 90 80 80, carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. The table shows spray-head variants against the same candidate parts code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation relating to ozone-depleting substances and an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to this parts line. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the actual goods from China. Supply the material specification and explain whether the heads contain any gas or rely on gas to function.

Confirm the commodity code using the assembly drawing, operating method and intended use before shipment. For complete appliances, see pressure washers and sprayers. The import duty and VAT guide explains the separate import tax calculation.

Specify the bottle fit and intended liquid

Provide the actual bottle or its neck drawing, including thread profile, sealing surface and closure dimensions. Specify dip-tube material, length and cut, gasket material, nozzle settings, spray pattern and output per stroke. Agree trigger force, priming behaviour and a repeated-operation test using an approved sample.

Name the intended liquid and its formulation, rather than asking for a head suitable for all chemicals. Agree compatibility testing for the seals, spring, tube and housing, including storage in the filled bottle. If supplied as a consumer product in the UK, the importer is responsible for its safety. Keep the agreed specification and test results with the purchase records.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 3,000 replacement trigger spray heads, with air freight under 8424 90 80 80, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,000, so it is £1,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Bottle fit: assemble production heads on your bottle and check thread engagement, gasket seating and leakage when stored in different orientations.

Spray operation: check priming, trigger return, nozzle shut-off, spray pattern and output against the approved sample.

Liquid compatibility: inspect tested samples for swollen seals, corrosion, cracking and changes in trigger force after exposure to the intended liquid.

Arrival condition: check dip tubes for kinks, closures for damage and cartons for mixed variants. Use the quality inspection guide to plan checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A closure can screw onto a bottle yet leak because the sealing surfaces do not match. A dip tube can reach the bottom but bend shut, while an unsuitable gasket can swell in the intended liquid. Test the complete bottle-and-head combination, rather than approving appearance alone.

Heads that spray water successfully can behave differently with a thicker liquid. Watch for uneven output, slow trigger return, nozzle drips and a shut-off position that still leaks. Agree how the factory will identify affected batches and correct failures before approving production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on replacement trigger spray heads from China?

The candidate other-parts code 8424 90 80 80 carries 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff facts, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the code for the actual assembly.

Will a replacement trigger head fit my existing bottle?

Check the neck drawing and test production samples on the actual bottle. Matching the apparent thread size does not establish gasket fit, sealing or dip-tube clearance.

Can the same trigger head spray every cleaning liquid?

Approve it for the intended formulation. Test seals, spring, tube and housing for compatibility, then compare priming, spray pattern and trigger return with the approved sample.

What should I check when trigger spray heads arrive?

Check bottle fit, leaks, nozzle shut-off, trigger return, dip-tube condition and mixed variants. Retain samples from the delivered batch for comparison with the approved sample.
