Sourcing gas-lighter valves from China

Replacement gas-lighter valves from China carry 0% UK duty under the lighter-parts line. Consumer replacement parts must be safe, and importers must demonstrate compliance with relevant safety requirements. Check fit and leakage in the intended lighter. 0% duty on replacement lighter valves

Heading 9613 covers cigarette lighters, other lighters and their parts, excluding flints and wicks. Replacement valves supplied as lighter parts fall within the parts line, 9613 90 00 00. The table shows different valve types sharing that line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, the parts line carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line. This guide concerns valves supplied separately from complete lighters.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, photographs and the valve's intended lighter application. For complete products within the wider heading, see refillable utility gas lighters.

Specify the valve and its mating lighter

Identify whether you need a refill inlet, fuel outlet or flame-adjustment assembly. Supply the intended lighter model, mating-part drawing and an approved sample. Agree the thread or press-fit dimensions, sealing face, stem travel, spring behaviour, outlet geometry and included seals. Avoid buying against photographs alone.

Specify body material, surface finish, seal material and compatibility with the intended fuel. Agree a laboratory test plan covering leakage when closed, opening and resealing, repeated operation and performance after temperature conditioning. Record the test conditions and acceptance criteria before approving production.

Consumer replacement valves sold in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Importers must demonstrate compliance with relevant safety requirements. Assess the valve installed in its intended lighter, including its effect on leakage and flame control; a loose-component fit check does not establish assembled performance.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 4,000 replacement gas-lighter valves under 9613 90 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £590 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,090. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,090, so it is £618. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: compare sampled valves with the approved drawing and install them in the intended mating parts. Check seating, retention, stem movement and interference with the operating mechanism.

Seals and finish: check seal material against the purchase specification, inspect seating faces for scratches and burrs, and look for damaged seals or debris inside the valve.

Leakage and operation: have a suitably equipped laboratory check shut-off, refill sealing and fuel delivery against the agreed test plan. Use production samples in the intended lighter.

Packing and identification: check valve type, seal inclusion and model identification against the order. Keep batches distinguishable and protect stems and sealing faces during transport. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A valve can look identical to the sample yet have a different sealing face, stem travel or spring. It may fit the body but leak when closed, reseal poorly after filling or deliver an unstable flame. Changed seal materials and machining debris can also undermine performance.

Keep the approved drawing, material specification and sample together, and ask the supplier to flag changes before production. Hold suspect stock for investigation and repeat assembled leak and operating checks after any change to the valve, seal or mating lighter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on replacement gas-lighter valves from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty under 9613 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Will a replacement valve fit any gas lighter?

Do not assume interchangeability. Match the seating face, thread or press fit, stem travel and fuel outlet to the intended model, then test the assembled lighter.

What should I test before buying replacement lighter valves?

Agree checks for closed-valve leakage, refill sealing, opening and resealing, fuel delivery and repeated operation. Test production samples in the intended lighter.

Does a valve sample prove the repaired lighter is safe?

A valve sample alone does not show assembled performance. Check the replacement in the intended lighter and retain the drawings, material details and test results supporting your assessment.
