Raw areca nuts: code and duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 0802 covers other nuts, fresh or dried, whether or not shelled or peeled. Raw areca nuts have the specific code 0802 80 00 00 and carry 0% duty from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is listed for this line. The table shows buying forms within the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff codes.

The tariff attaches an import control of organic products. For organic food from China entering Great Britain, obtain a Great Britain certificate of inspection for each consignment and check the exporter’s control body and country against the non-UK organic registers. The exporter’s control body issues the certificate.

Confirm the fresh or dried condition, shell status, intended use and any processing through finding your commodity code. Fresh or dried unmixed tropical nuts fall within the raw-nut headings; roasted, salted, coated or mixed nuts need a separate classification check. For other nuts within this heading, see the raw ginkgo nuts guide.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify drying, maturity and intended use

State that the order is raw areca nut, also called betel nut, and identify whether you want fresh or dried goods, in shell or shelled. Agree maturity, size grading, colour, whole-nut content, permitted broken material, moisture, foreign matter and packing. Ask the supplier to describe drying and any treatments rather than accepting the word ‘raw’ alone.

Settle the intended use before approving a sample. Official UK oral-health guidance associates betel quid without tobacco, including areca nut, with increased oral cancer risk. A clean appearance or satisfactory contamination report does not establish safety for chewing. Seek a food-safety assessment of the intended product and use before buying for consumption; unsafe food must not be sold.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative wholesale order: 5 tonnes of dried raw areca nuts under 0802 80 00 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,800, so it is £4,360. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity and grade: compare the delivered nuts with the approved sample, including maturity, shell status, size, colour and broken material.

Condition: open packs across the lot and check for dampness, mould, insect damage, foreign matter and unusual odours; measure moisture against the contract.

Batch tests: agree a sampling plan and laboratory checks for mycotoxins, pesticide residues and microbiological contamination appropriate to the intended use. Match reports to the shipment lot.

Packing and records: check seals, bag condition, batch identification and supplier records on arrival. For organic orders, match the inspection certificate to the consignment. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong

An approved dried sample can conceal a shipment with uneven drying, mixed maturity or excessive broken nuts. Damp packing can leave internal mould that is missed by checking only the outside of bags. Record arrival condition, retain representative samples and hold suspect stock while the discrepancy is investigated.

A raw-nut quotation can also turn into a flavoured or mixed chewing product. Get the actual composition and processing description before shipment. Zero customs duty does not establish food safety, and testing for contamination does not resolve the oral-health concern associated with areca use.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on raw areca nuts from China?

Raw areca nuts under 0802 80 00 00 carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff reading. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is listed for that line.

Do organic areca nuts from China need an inspection certificate?

For Great Britain, each organic food consignment needs a Great Britain certificate of inspection. Check the exporter’s control body and country against the non-UK organic registers.

Does a clean laboratory report mean areca nuts are safe to chew?

A contamination report does not establish chewing safety. Official UK guidance links betel quid without tobacco, including areca nut, to increased oral cancer risk. Assess the intended use before ordering.

What should I specify when ordering dried raw areca nuts?

Agree shell status, maturity, size, colour, moisture, whole and broken material, foreign matter, drying treatments, packing and batch testing. Match the shipment to an approved sample.
