Sourcing pyrolytic graphite sheets from China
Pyrolytic graphite sheets classified under heading 3801 carry 0% UK duty from China. Confirm classification from the material and supplied form, especially for adhesive-backed or laminated sheets, and assess UK REACH applicability. Cambridge China Bridge sources pyrolytic graphite sheets.

Zero duty within heading 3801
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3801 covers artificial graphite, colloidal or semi-colloidal graphite, carbonaceous pastes and graphite-based or other carbon preparations in semi-manufactured forms. For bare pyrolytic graphite sheets, consider the other artificial graphite line, 3801 10 90 85, subject to confirmation. The table repeats this candidate line for different sheet supply forms.
The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty on goods from China throughout this heading, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. This describes the tariff record, rather than a complete assessment of the product's chemical or end-use obligations.
Confirm the commodity code using the manufacturing description, composition, drawings and details of any adhesive or protective layers. Do not assume that a laminated or finished component belongs under the bare material's code. For the wider heading, see our artificial graphite blocks guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bare pyrolytic graphite sheets, classification to confirm | 3801 10 90 85 | 0% | None |
Specify the sheet and its thermal test
Specify pyrolytic graphite rather than accepting a generic graphite sheet description. Agree graphite thickness separately from total laminate thickness, sheet dimensions, tolerances, surface condition and cutting drawings. Request separate thermal conductivity results along the sheet and through its thickness, with the test method, temperature and specimen construction stated.
For adhesive-backed or insulated sheets, specify the adhesive, protective film, exposed edges, release liner and intended operating conditions. Test the assembled sheet in your own heat-spreading application. Under UK REACH, registration applies to substances, mixtures and, in limited cases, substances in articles. Assess applicability to the supplied construction rather than assuming that all graphite products have identical obligations.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 bare pyrolytic graphite sheets; illustrative order, not a quotation under 3801 10 90 85, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,600, so it is £720. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: check graphite thickness, overall thickness, outlines and cut-outs against the approved drawing.
Thermal performance: check batch test results identify the measurement direction and match the approved material and test method.
Layers: check adhesive coverage, liner release, film integrity and exposed edges; test electrical isolation where your design requires it.
Condition: check for creases, cracks, flaking, delamination and damaged corners on arrival. Compare retained samples using the agreed inspection procedure.

What goes wrong
A supplier substitutes expanded graphite foil for the approved pyrolytic material, quotes conductivity without its measurement direction, or reports graphite thickness while delivering a much thicker laminate. These differences can change fit and thermal performance. Keep an approved sample and require written agreement before changing material or layer construction.
Creased packaging can leave cracked sheets; adhesive can lift during assembly; exposed graphite edges can compromise electrical isolation. Check samples after cutting, liner removal and installation, as well as inspecting loose sheets. Resolve failures before repeating the order.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on pyrolytic graphite sheets from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 0% for heading 3801, including 3801 10 90 85, with no listed trade remedies. Confirm that your sheet construction belongs in this heading.
Is pyrolytic graphite sheet the same as expanded graphite foil?
Do not treat them as interchangeable. Specify the manufacturing route and approve the actual material through dimensional and thermal tests in your assembly.
Which thermal conductivity result should I ask for?
Ask for results along the sheet and through its thickness, identifying the test method, temperature and specimen construction. Compare results obtained on the same basis.
Do pyrolytic graphite sheets need UK REACH registration?
Assess the supplied construction. HSE says registration applies to substances, mixtures and, in limited cases, substances in articles. A graphite sheet description alone does not settle applicability.
