Sourcing PTFE rods from China

PTFE rods from China under the relevant addition-polymer line carry a flat 6% UK duty, with no listed trade remedy or suspension. Confirm the composition and degree of working before choosing the code, and check UK REACH Candidate List obligations for the supplied material. Cambridge China Bridge sources PTFE rods.

PTFE rod duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, heading 3916 covers plastic monofilament whose cross-sectional dimension exceeds 1 mm, rods, sticks and profile shapes, whether or not surface-worked but not otherwise worked. For the wider product family, see our plastic profiles and rods guide.

The supplied facts list 6% duty for goods from China under 3916 90 50 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. This is the relevant addition-polymer line for PTFE rod stock. Only this supplied line is relevant to the table; the other lines cover different plastics or specifically described composite rods.

Confirm the formulation and whether the goods remain rod stock rather than finished machined components. A suspension for a cellular composite rod containing PTFE is not a general PTFE rod suspension. Give your broker the material declaration, drawing and manufacturing description, and confirm the commodity code.

Specify the PTFE grade and machining allowance

State whether the rods are virgin, reprocessed or filled PTFE. For filled grades, name the filler and agree its content rather than accepting a colour description. Specify diameter, length, ovality, straightness, surface finish and machining allowance. Agree whether the factory will mould or extrude the rods, and approve a sample from the proposed production process.

Describe the intended load, temperature, chemical exposure and mating surface. Ask for batch-linked material records and trial-machine a sample using your intended operation. Check the formulation against the UK REACH Candidate List: inclusion of a substance brings supplier obligations. For food-contact use, request evidence for the exact formulation and intended contact conditions rather than accepting a generic food-grade claim.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative machining-stock order of PTFE rods in mixed diameters under 3916 90 50 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,500. Duty at 6% is £570. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,070, so it is £2,014. Import taxes total £2,584; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £570 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure diameter along each sampled rod and around its circumference; check length, ovality and straightness against the agreed drawing.

Material: match grade, filler declaration and batch records to the purchase order; retain labelled samples for comparison with repeat deliveries.

Internal condition: inspect cut faces and trial-machined samples for voids, cracks, inclusions and uneven filler distribution.

Packing and arrival: check rod support, end protection, abrasion and batch separation before shipment and on receipt. Agree the checks through our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A rod can look acceptable outside but reveal voids or inclusions when bored or turned. Diameter variation and bowing consume the machining allowance, while an unapproved filler or reprocessed material changes the behaviour of the finished part. Colour alone does not establish the grade.

Keep an approved sample, drawing and material declaration together. If an arrival sample fails, identify the affected batch and hold it for investigation before machining the remaining stock. For repeat orders, compare material records as well as dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on PTFE rods from China?

The supplied tariff facts give 6% for 3916 90 50 90, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control.

Does the PTFE-containing rod suspension cover ordinary PTFE rods?

No. The supplied suspension describes a particular cellular composite rod. Ordinary PTFE rod stock on 3916 90 50 90 has no listed suspension.

Should I buy virgin or filled PTFE rods?

Choose against the finished part's load, mating surface and chemical exposure. Specify the filler and its content, and trial-machine the proposed grade before approving production.

What should I check when PTFE rods arrive?

Check diameter, ovality, straightness, grade and batch identity. Inspect cut faces and trial-machined samples for internal defects, and check transport damage before releasing the stock.
