Duty and VAT on bookmark calendars

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 4910 covers calendars of any kind, printed, including calendar blocks. The supplied tariff data lists 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. The bookmark formats in the table share the same commodity line. Printed calendars are standard-rated for VAT; allow for 20% import VAT.

The tariff file also attaches a DCMS Export Licence control, describing a document waiver for goods manufactured or produced less than 50 years ago. Ask your customs broker to confirm the control's relevance and any documentation for your shipment. Government cultural-goods guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement.

This guide concerns printed calendar bookmarks made from paper or card. Give your broker the artwork, material specification and details of any attachments to confirm the commodity code. For the wider calendar heading, see printed pocket calendars.

Specify a readable calendar that works as a bookmark

Agree finished dimensions, card weight and thickness, grain direction, corner shape and surface finish. Check that the bookmark fits the intended books without excessive bulk. Specify whether it is uncoated, varnished or laminated, and approve a physical sample on the intended stock.

Supply checked calendar artwork and proofread the year, weekdays and month layout at actual size. State the holiday region if holidays are included. Keep small date numerals clear of the trim and rounded corners. Check reverse-side orientation and contrast against any photograph or promotional background.

Consumer products supplied in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. For this product, assess cut edges, lifting laminate and any added tassels or decorations. Agree the inspection brief before printing through quality inspection planning.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20,000 printed card bookmark calendars under 4910 00 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,800, so it is £1,360. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dates and legibility: compare production samples with the approved date file, checking the year, weekday alignment, holiday wording and small numerals.

Card and trimming: compare thickness and stiffness with the signed sample; check finished shape, smooth corners, clean edges and consistent margins.

Print and finish: check colour against the physical proof, inspect laminate edges and rub the printed surface against clean paper to look for transfer.

Arrival condition: open cartons from different positions; check for dampness, curl, scuffed faces, bent corners and mixed artwork versions, then reconcile pack counts with the order.

What goes wrong

A reused calendar template can carry the wrong year or weekday alignment. A reduced proof can hide unreadable dates, and trimming can cut into the date grid. Approve the calendar at finished size and retain the approved artwork version with the order.

Thin stock bends in use, uneven lamination curls the bookmark, and poorly cured ink can mark book pages. Transport moisture and loose packing can spoil otherwise acceptable printing. Compare arrival samples with the retained sample and record defects before distributing stock.
