Sourcing prawn crackers from China
UK duty is 8% across the selected heading 1905 lines for prawn crackers from China. Classification depends on recipe and processing; products containing real prawn need animal-ingredient import checks before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources prawn crackers.

Prawn cracker duty and import controls
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected heading 1905 lines carry 8% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The heading covers bakers' wares and similar products. The table presents classification candidates for different cracker recipes and processes, rather than interchangeable codes.
The tariff attaches veterinary, restriction on entry into free circulation, organic and genetic modification controls. For real-prawn recipes, confirm composite-product status, approved-country and establishment requirements, certificates and any exemption with your customs broker. Applicable restricted foods must enter through designated border control points. Organic importers need approved UK control-body certification; confirm the certificate of inspection with your broker. For rice-containing recipes, confirm the genetic modification documents and clearance requirements with your broker.
Give your broker the complete recipe, sugar composition and manufacturing process, including whether the crackers are unexpanded pellets or ready-to-eat snacks. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. For the wider heading, see rice crackers from China.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Savoury or salted extruded or expanded crackers | 1905 90 55 00 | 8% | None |
| Prawn crackers classified as biscuits | 1905 90 45 00 | 8% | None |
| Other crackers with at least 5% sucrose, invert sugar or isoglucose | 1905 90 70 00 | 8% | None |
| Other crackers outside the preceding subdivisions | 1905 90 80 00 | 8% | None |
Specify the recipe and frying performance
Specify pellets for frying or ready-to-eat crackers. Record the starch source, actual prawn content, prawn ingredient supplier, seasoning, colours and frying oil where applicable. Obtain the complete recipe, including compound flavourings, rather than accepting a description such as seafood flavour.
Agree pellet thickness, shape, expansion, crispness, flavour and acceptable breakage against an approved sample. For pellets, agree a repeatable frying method and compare expansion, hard centres and oil absorption. For ready-to-eat crackers, assess rancidity and crispness after storage in the intended packaging.
Confirm food-business registration and labelling requirements with the relevant local authority, and prepare English labels with ingredients, emphasised allergens, net weight, best-before date and a UK address. Declare allergen sources throughout the ingredient list, including compound seasonings. If the recipe contains rice, note that no genetically modified rice or rice products are authorised in the UK.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 12 tonnes of ready-to-eat savoury expanded prawn crackers under 1905 90 55 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £22,500. Duty at 8% is £1,800. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,300, so it is £4,860. Import taxes total £6,660; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,800 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Recipe: compare production records and seasoning specifications with the approved recipe; check the source and processing of the prawn ingredient.
Performance: fry sampled pellets using the agreed method; check expansion, hard centres, colour and oil absorption. Check ready-to-eat packs for crispness and rancid odours.
Labels: compare English artwork with the actual recipe, including prawn and seasoning allergens; check net weight, date coding and the UK address.
Packaging: inspect seals, moisture protection, crushed crackers and damp cartons on arrival. Use the inspection guide to agree how findings are recorded.

What goes wrong
A sample can fry well while the production pellets expand unevenly or leave hard centres. Changes in starch, pellet thickness or drying can alter performance. Ready-to-eat crackers can arrive soft, crushed or rancid. Retain approved samples and compare arrival samples using the same preparation method.
The paperwork can describe prawn flavour while the seasoning contains processed prawn, fish or milk. That changes the ingredient and import assessment. Obtain the complete seasoning specification, reconcile it with the label and settle the tariff controls with your broker before shipment.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on prawn crackers from China?
The selected heading 1905 cracker lines carry 8% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Confirm the code from the recipe and process.
Can I import prawn crackers containing real prawns?
Check the exact recipe before ordering. Animal ingredients can bring composite-product rules, approved-country and establishment checks, certificates and border controls; an exemption needs confirmation.
Do uncooked pellets use the same code as fried prawn crackers?
Do not assume they do. Give your broker the recipe and manufacturing process, explaining whether the product is an unexpanded pellet or a ready-to-eat cracker.
What should I test in a prawn cracker sample?
For pellets, compare expansion, hard centres and oil absorption using an agreed frying method. For ready-to-eat crackers, check crispness, rancidity, breakage and seal integrity.
